🚨 POLL: If you had to vote today on the DCSD $54 million mill levy override, how would you vote? 🚨

A mill levy override is an addition to the property tax that funds a school district's general operations, separate from a bond, which borrows money for buildings. An override does not expire on its own; it continues until voters or the legislature change it.

The Board of Education referred it to the ballot on a unanimous 7 to 0 vote. The district puts the cost at about $33.70 a year for every $100,000 of a home's actual value, roughly $168.50 a year on a $500,000 home.

Who Shot Melanie the Bear? Castle Rock Still Has No Answers

Colorado Parks and Wildlife went quiet after a mother bear was shot and killed near the Terrain neighborhood on July 9. Fifty days on, it has not said who fired, whether it was legal, or where her cubs are. Its last statement to this publication was July 17.

🗳️ CASTLE ROCK’S 2026 BALLOT IS TAKING SHAPE

The candidates for three Castle Rock Town Council seats have officially been finalized for the November 3 election.

Here’s who will appear on the ballot:

DISTRICT 3
Chris Phelen
Tiffany Coyle
Matt Smith

DISTRICT 5
Mitchell Sawin
Patrick Reilly

MAYOR
Laura Cavey
Amelia Thomas
Stu Butler

District 3 includes portions of The Meadows, Castle Highlands, Red Hawk and the Wolfensberger Road corridor west of Prairie Hawk Drive.

District 5 covers southeast Castle Rock.

Only residents living in Districts 3 and 5 will vote in those respective council races, but the Mayor is elected townwide, meaning every registered Castle Rock voter will have the mayoral race on their ballot.

Ballots are expected to begin mailing October 2, with Election Day on November 3.

Write-in candidates have until 5 p.m. Friday, September 4 to file the required affidavit with the Town Clerk.

DCCO will be following the races as we get closer to November.
