The 2017 Castine Plein Air Festival was held on July 20 - 22. Thirty six juried artists participated in the three day event and enjoyed fair weather througout, though it was rather warm and humid. The festival concluded on Saturday afternoon with an awards ceremony, reception and art sale. The artwork was stunning and varied. There was something for every art lover.
Winners for this year's festival and their winning paintings are the following:
First Place - Charles Fenner Ball, Bangor, ME - "Up from the Cove" (morning) - oil
Second Place - Frank Costantino, Winthrop, MA - "Nature and Man" - watercolor
Third Place - Anthony Watkins, Bradley, ME - 'Morning, Water Street View" - oil
Honorable mention award winners:
D.K. (Deke) Palecek, Kaukauna, WI - "Back Bay Swimhole" - oil
Stephan Giannini, Rockland, ME - "Castine Harbor" - oil
Michael Vermette, Indian Island, ME - "Sunrise at Eaton's Boathouse" - oil
Kathryn Shagas, Belfast, ME - "Nautilus Island" - acrylic
John Slivjak, Philadelphia, PA - "Morning Light" - oil
The winner of the special category "Castine Captured" was Anthony Watkins of Bradley, Maine for his oil painting "Summer Night, Castine Inn." The painting is pictured at the upper right.
Our judges for the festival were Jerry Rose of Sedgwick, ME and Michael Chesley Johnson of Lubec, ME. Congratulations to all winners. Thank you to our judges, jurors, to our artists and to the art loving public for their support of the festival. We look forward to our sixth festival next July.
