Just a reminder that the Diamond Lake Garage sale occurs next weekend This year, Helping Hands of Cass County will have a truck at the DLYC parking lot on Saturday starting at 11am for those who had a few items left.

The nonprofit uses proceeds from the thrift store to fund local programs supporting their mission: To serve the economically challenged who live in Cass County and help them bridge the gap.

While most donations are welcome, most needed items include:
Household items (everyday dishes and utensils, cookware, sheets, bedspreads, decor, etc.)
Toys, games puzzles
Kids clothes (ages 0-16)

Cannot accept:
Mattresses
Furniture
Paints, varnishes, etc

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Van Buren and Cass Counties through this evening. Heat index values could reach near 100Β°F due to high temperatures and humidity.

Hot weather can increase the risk of heat-related illness. Stay safe by:

🏠 Staying in air-conditioned buildings when possible
πŸ‘• Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
πŸš— Never leaving children or pets in vehicles
πŸ‘΅ Checking on older adults, neighbors, and others who may be vulnerable to the heat

Thunderstorms are also possible later today and this evening. Some storms may produce strong winds capable of bringing down tree limbs and causing power outages. Secure outdoor items and be prepared to move indoors if severe weather approaches.

At Monday's Dowagiac City Council meeting, Ward One Councilperson and Mayor Pro Tem Danielle Lucas became the first woman and the first person of color to preside over a Dowagiac City Council meeting, during Mayor Patrick M. Bakeman's scheduled absence.

"I can’t think of a better person to lead in my place than Mayor Pro Tem Lucas," said Dowagiac Mayor Patrick M. Bakeman. "Danielle has demonstrated her commitment to this community through her dedication to her family and to the city of Dowagiac. She is truly a role model for all, and I am proud of the leadership she continues to provide for our city."
