Shakira is working toward completing her education through Project STAGE to become a florist. She chose us at employU to help her gain work experience, and with the help of her Employment Specialist, Jeff, she is doing just that at Chaney’s Flowers in Fort Pierce.

Shakira works alongside her mentor, Lance, learning how to arrange flowers and create beautiful displays. With support, she continues to grow in a career field she truly enjoys and works towards her goal of living on her own!

For Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, we’re highlighting something worth remembering: there’s more than one way to learn, work, and succeed.

Creating a workplace that supports different ways of learning doesn’t have to be complicated. Clear communication, helpful tools, and opportunities to learn and grow can help people bring their strengths to work.

Learning disabilities can affect how someone receives, processes, or communicates information, but they don’t define everything that person can do. Different people may learn in different ways, and the right tools and support can make a difference.

Matthew is building valuable work experience at McDaniel’s Piggly Wiggly in Sneads. As a person with autism, Matthew brings focus, attention to detail, and a strong desire to do his best at work. In his role as a store cleaner, he sweeps floors, stocks shelves, and faces products throughout the aisles.

With support from his employU Employment Specialist, Pattie, and his coworkers, Matthew learned his schedule, became more confident in his duties, and found ways to work efficiently. He takes pride in completing tasks correctly and enjoys learning something new each day.

Matthew feels accomplished and excited about his success. He hopes to become a chef or baker, so learning about what can happen after the food has been made is a great step towards his future.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to identity or communication. People in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community may use different terms, tools, and methods of communication.

The best thing you can do? Ask, listen, and respect each person’s preference.

Nicholas turned hands-on work experience into a permanent job at Fuel Fitness in Tallahassee! After completing several paid internships, he found a workplace where he could help others while learning about fitness and business. As a Front Desk Associate, Nicholas helps customers, signs up new members, records classes, and keeps the gym clean. With support from his employU Employment Specialist, Tiffany, he built confidence in workplace communication, customer service, and learning new tasks. His coworkers also helped him learn the gym’s equipment and policies, making him feel like part of the team. Nicholas hopes to grow into a management role and one day use what he learns to manage a business of his own.

Luciana is gaining confidence and valuable work experience at Jeds Barbershop in Marianna. As a young person with dyslexia, she is not letting her disability stand in the way of pursuing her passion for cosmetology. In her front desk role, Luciana greets customers, helps them with their needs, and keeps the shop clean and organized. With support from her employU Employment Specialist, Pattie, she has become more comfortable speaking with customers and using her voice at work. Luciana now shows initiative by looking for new tasks and ways to learn from the professionals around her. This experience is helping her take important steps toward her goal of earning a cosmetology license.
