Are you a paralegal student in Wyoming? This one is for you.

LAW-The Wyoming Paralegal Association offers the Outstanding Student Award each year to recognize students who are working hard to build a career in the legal profession.

To be eligible you must be actively pursuing a legal assistant degree at a Wyoming institution, have completed at least 12 credit hours of legal education courses, and maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 over the last three semesters. You do not need to be a full-time student and you do not need to be a LAW member to apply.

The recipient receives free LAW membership for one year, registration and attendance as LAW's guest at the Spring Seminar and Annual Meeting, and a recognition plaque. The recipient also chooses one of the following:

Option 1: A hard copy of the NALA CP Fundamentals Book, a review manual valued at $110.

Option 2: Be nominated by the Awards Committee for the NALA Student of the Year Award, which includes a paid student membership to NALA ($50 value), and receive paid registration for the LAW CP Review Course in the spring ($60 value).

The application deadline is January 15.

Did you know you may already qualify for LAW membership?

LAW-The Wyoming Paralegal Association welcomes paralegals at every stage of their career. You do not need a CP exam or a paralegal degree to join. If you have a baccalaureate degree in any field plus six months of paralegal training, three years of law-related experience under attorney supervision, or two years of in-house paralegal training, you may already meet the qualifications for active membership.

Student membership is also available for those currently pursuing a paralegal certificate or degree, and the first year is free for freshman members.

Active membership is $65 annually. Student membership is $25 annually.

Sometimes life happens when you least expect it.

The Henry's Hand-Up Fund is LAW's discretionary fund established to support members facing unexpected or emergency expenses. It was created in honor of the late Henry Cuartas, beloved spouse of longtime LAW member Ginger Cuartas, CP, who passed away in 2018 after battling a Glioblastoma brain tumor.

Henry's memory lives on through this fund and through the LAW community that continues to support one another when it matters most.

If you are a LAW member going through a difficult time, please do not hesitate to reach out. That is exactly what this fund is here for.

Volunteer opportunity! When a dispute arises over legal fees, having a fair, impartial process matters — for clients and attorneys alike. That's where Fee Arbitrators come in, serving as hearing officers appointed by the Wyoming State Bar to review and decide these disputes.

This role is open to both lawyers and members of the public. Larger disputes are decided by a three-arbitrator panel, one of whom must be a non-lawyer, making this a meaningful way for community members outside the legal profession to lend their perspective to the process.

Where can a paralegal career take you?

Almost anywhere.

Paralegals work in private law firms, state and local government, federal agencies, hospitals, insurance companies, financial institutions, tech firms, and the military. They specialize in family law, personal injury, criminal defense, estate planning, environmental law, workers' compensation, civil litigation, and more.

In Wyoming that range is real. Our own board of directors represents experience across nearly every one of those areas.

There is more than one path into the paralegal profession, and in Wyoming you do not need a degree or certificate to get started.

Many Wyoming paralegals build their expertise through on the job experience, working their way up and developing skills across a wide range of practice areas. Others come from completely different fields, bringing degrees in education, criminal justice, communications, business, and more, and find that their background translates naturally into legal work.

For those who want formal training, Wyoming has solid options. The Casper College Paralegal Program offers both an Associate of Arts and a post-bachelor's certificate in Paralegal Studies. Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne also offers a paralegal program for those in the southern part of the state.

Once you are working in the field, pursuing certification through NALA is a way to demonstrate your expertise and commitment to the profession. The Certified Paralegal credential is recognized nationally, and Advanced Certified Paralegal designations allow you to specialize in areas like discovery, trial practice, family law, business structure, and more.

No two days look the same for a Wyoming paralegal.

In larger firms you might specialize in one practice area, personal injury, family law, estate planning, or civil litigation. In smaller offices you might be doing all of it. Drafting documents, managing client relationships, coordinating with courts, handling billing, and keeping the whole operation running smoothly.
