Jug Handle Restoration nursery has a beautiful duet of Western Trilium (Trilluin ovatum) blooming today. This gorgeous flower can live into its 70's, given the right conditions. On the Mendocino coast, spring has sprung and hundreds of western trillium, or western wake robins, are blooming. Trillium seeds have a hidden surprise, an elaiosome, a lipid rich oily structure which attract ants and wasps. The insects gather the seed for this tasty structure and aid in seed dispersal with the perk of a snack. Seeds are either left in the insect nests to germinate or are discarded out of the nest to germinate there. This creates large stands of the flowers. Pure white indicates it has yet to be pollinated, while blush, pink, purple and even red, indicate it has been pollinated and is working now to create seeds. Insects know this and head to the white flowers. See the larger o***y (central in flower) on the purple flower in the pictures? Enjoy the springtime friends, there are wonder to behold. Come and stay with us and enjoy the blooms! A few pictures from a walk today too.
