The date marks the anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, the law that finally granted women permanent, regular status in the U.S. military.

📅 Why June 12?

June 12 commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act in 1948 — the moment women were officially allowed to serve as permanent, full members of the U.S. military rather than temporary or auxiliary personnel.

Several states, including Texas, New York, and others, have formally designated June 12 as Women Veterans Day or Women Veterans Recognition Day. Texas, home to the largest population of women veterans, passed its legislation in 2017.
