In light of the recent avalanche activity in our riding area, we think the following is important and hope some of you will consider attending to support.....

On Sunday, December 29, 2024 @ 1PM youth WMSC member, Hayden Hull, will place and dedicate his senior project, which is the design and build of an Avalanche Beacon Check Station for Anderson Creek Trailhead. He has been working with the Hoffer Family, WMSC, Forest Service personnel and Valley County Commissioners since last summer. The station/sign is complete and ready to be installed for use. Please join us for a short ceremony at Anderson Creek Parking Area and help us spread the word about the importance of avalanche safety! Please share!

For those interested.... It sounds as if the Four Corners Fire is moving south and west, which takes the Warming Hut out of the bullseye for now.

Fire Update – Four Corners Fire, 0800 August 18, 2022

Cascade is not threatened by this wildfire.

A Type 2 Incident Management Team has assumed command of the fire. An Emergency Fire Area Closure will be in effect by noon today. Range Specialists will continue to work with permittees to access the closed area to gather livestock.

The fire is at 4,112 acres with an Infrared flight scheduled for tonight. Yesterday and throughout the night the fire continued to spread to the south and to the west. Southern spread was into the south facing slope of Squaw Creek. Additional spread of the fire to west-southwest occurred but did not cross over the 231 Road in the Bull Creek and Sheep Creek areas - this road is being used as a holding feature with the intent to keep the fire to the east of the road. The east side of the fire along the ridge is holding well.

Spot fires ahead of the fire continue to be the biggest challenge in constructing and holding fire lines on the west and south flanks of the fire. A dozer containment line is established along the northern flank of the fire, it held well and is acting as an anchor point to bring fire line down the western flank of the fire.

Firefighters are actively fighting the fire on the west flank with the majority of resources assigned to this area including aerial support from helicopters, water scoopers and large airtankers. Aerial resources will also be used to try to keep the south end of the fire in check while firefighters establish an anchor point to move around the eastern flank of the fire.

Full suppression of this fire will continue with firefighters supported by aerial assets. We will maintain the volume of aircraft assigned to the fire to assist the ground firefighters in making headway towards containing the fire. The fuel type is predominantly Sub-alpine fir which is prone to torching and sending spot fires out in front of the fire. Short range spotting, isolated torching as well as creeping and smoldering fire activity is present.

Boaters on Cascade Reservoir please be aware - the water scooping aircraft (CL-415s) will continue to work the fire by scoping water from the reservoir today. Please stay clear of the path of the aircraft! The water scoopers hold 1,600 gallons of water and it takes 12 seconds to fill to capacity while skimming over the water.

During nighttime hours, some torching of trees will likely continue and may be visible from highway 55 and from highway 95 and surrounding areas. As we have firefighters on scene, there is no need to report sightings of flames

The Boise National Forest has reviewed and accepted Tamarack Resort’s special use application for its proposal to expand their footprint on 2,099 acres of National Forest System lands. Tamarack’s proposal was reviewed using the Special Uses Screening Criteria (36 CFR 251.54) which is the first set of requirements that a proposal must meet before being further analyzed.

“With the increase in outdoor recreation in the intermountain region, we recognize the need to expand the recreation opportunities to meet public needs, said Tawnya Brummett Boise National Forest Supervisor. “Tamarack Resort has shown they have the resources to move forward in the special use process and as a result, the proposal will enter into the beginning of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process." The NEPA process includes extensive public involvement, including formal comment periods. https://www.fs.fed.us/emc/nepa/index.shtml

“I’d like to emphasize that the acceptance of the proposal does not mean that the expansion will be permitted, instead it is just the first step in beginning the environmental analysis and public involvement that is required for this type of project,” said Brummett.

Tamarack Resort currently operates exclusively on Idaho State Endowment and private lands. The proposed project would expand to 2,099 acres of NFS lands, primarily to the south of the existing resort, significantly increasing year-round recreation opportunities. The proposal includes the installation of several new ski lifts and a variety of expanded summer recreation activities.

Due to the magnitude and complexity of the proposal, including a possible amendment of the Forest Plan, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be required. Next steps include developing a timeline and schedule for the NEPA process and decision.

Once the project is formally launched, the Forest will send out a detailed announcement and it will be available for public review and comment at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/boise/landmanagement/projects
