Association Of Adult Musicians With Hearing Loss Aamhl Inc Nonprofit/charity that supports deaf and hard of hearing adult musicians. Audiologists and music ed We are a diverse and unique group of musicians.

Some of us lost our hearing as children, and took up playing a musical instrument after the onset of the hearing loss. Others had normal hearing, played our instruments for a long time, then experienced hearing loss. In any case, the degree of hearing loss is of such significance it now impacts on how we play (or no longer play) music. The purpose of our organization is to exchange information on

how to continue making music with a hearing loss, both in solo or ensemble situations, how hearing instruments such as hearing aids/cochlear implants/assistive listening devices help or hinder us in our musical endeavors, and how to cope with the angst some of us feel when playing for an audience who most likely has better hearing than we do. Although most of us are amateur musicians, we cheer those of us who have succeeded in becoming professional musicians. Our organization is also open to music educators and audiologists who are interested in knowing how to work with, and teach adults with hearing loss.

In addition to the musicians' panel which we are presenting on Friday, October 9, we are also hosting a jam session for deaf and hard of hearing musicians on Thursday, October 8. We are waiting for information about the exact time and room location of this jam session.

We would like to encourage all Association members to consider joining us at ALDAcon to celebrate those of us who work to keep our musical journey going despite having significant hearing loss. And if you enjoy singing you probably don't want to miss the karaoke party on Saturday, October 10 which is an annual ALDAcon tradition.

Congratulations to Tyler Mazone for completing his Doctor of Musical Arts from Michigan State University!
Tyler is bimodal (wears a hearing aid in one ear and a cochlear implant in the other ear). He might be the only Deaf graduate student who completed a doctorate in musical composition with the help of sign language interpreters over five years!
