Shield of Faith:
Ephesians 6:16 “Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.”
To quench, in this context, means to extinguish or put out.
Paul is telling us to use our shield of faith to put out all fiery flames the enemy is throwing our way.
We’ve briefly tapped into what faith is during our last study on the Breastplate of Righteousness (Breastplate of Faith and Love).
Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
We’ve identified that faith is an action, but the types of action taken in each of these pieces of armor is different.
With our breastplate, we are possessing firm faith in action that we are the righteousness of God.
With our shield, we are possessing firm faith in action, believing all that God has said about us (His chosen), and rebuking any of the enemy’s tactics of lies & confusion.
The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, and if he can kill your faith, he’ll have access to destroy your mind, family, relationships, health, finances, and everything that is attached to your faith.
This is why we need our sturdy, durable, protective shield of FAITH; to block his attacks.
Often times, we underestimate the power of faith.
Faith will listen to a Doctor’s report, but give the final say to Jesus.
Faith will see $20 left over for the next 2 weeks, but trust God to move and supply all needs.
Faith will experience a storm, and command it with the power of God to be still.
Faith will endure pain and grief, and declare “Even in this, all things are working together for my good because I love God and I am called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
In Matthew 8:24-27, when Jesus was with His disciples on the sea, there was a great storm and the ship became covered with waves. Jesus was asleep. His disciples found Him and woke Him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
But He said to them, ‘Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?’ Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.”
As disciples of Christ, He is also speaking to us. Why are you afraid of war? Where is your authority?
Not only does God show us what we can do by faith, He explains it plainly in Matthew 17:20 “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”
Now, I encourage you to think about your shield.
Is it reliable?
Is it effective?
Can it withstand repeated attacks?
Can it maneuver various angles?
Is it firm and secure in grip?
If one of these areas is lacking, or if your shield has wear and tear, it’s time for enhancement.
If you’re asking “How do I increase my faith,”
Romans 10:17 - “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Your faith will be strengthened by both audible preaching of the Word of God, and your study of the Word of God.
If you’re saying “I want to read about faith,” Start with Jesus’ healing and deliverance ministry in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). You will then understand the scripture “For with God nothing is impossible” stated by Angel Gabriel in Luke 1:37.
Let us develop a posture of “It is written…” rather than “Lord, save me, I am perishing.”
And since it is written that we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us, we should be carrying a Conqueror-Like shield of faith in warfare.
