Dear Toward Zero Waste Community Members,
I’m writing to ask for your support so Toward Zero Waste can continue to bring SHARE (Stop Hunger and Restore Earth), a food recovery program for unopened food items, to more Wake County Public schools. Every day, students go hungry while perfectly good food is thrown away in our school cafeterias.
Let me tell you about a student I’ll call Jordan.
Before SHARE, Jordan quietly saved graham crackers and fruit cups for his younger sister. Anything he couldn’t hide had to go in the trash. When SHARE launched at his school, he no longer had to choose between hunger and embarrassment. He could simply take what he needed and leave the extra food for other students.
Under current NC regulations, schools are not permitted to run a food recovery program like SHARE independently. They need a nonprofit partner to manage it safely and effectively. That’s where Toward Zero Waste comes in, and why your support matters so much.
You can give an entire school full of children like Jordan access to nourishing food every afternoon for just $105 a month, or $1,250 for the initial year.
In one school year, SHARE can keep 7,300+ food items out of the landfill per school, and instead feed those items to students. More than 40 more Wake County schools are waiting to implement SHARE. We can only say “yes” if we raise $1,250 per school by December 31 and secure the funds needed for Toward Zero Waste to continue this vital work.
Your gift has an immediate impact:
$25 assists with staff education at two schools
$50 provides the necessary program signage for a school
$100 purchases a Collection Cart for the cafeteria
$300 funds a SHARE Fridge
Please make your year-end gift today.
Together, we can ensure that every student in Wake County has access to the nourishment they need to learn, grow, and feel secure.
With gratitude,
Kathleen Liebowitz
Executive Director
P.S. A year-end gift made by December 31st helps us reach more hungry students right away. Every dollar truly matters.
