At VFW Auxiliary National Headquarters, we have received a number of questions recently about VFW and VFW Auxiliary scholarships and contests. There is some confusion about which scholarships and contests "belong" to which organization, so we've created this quick, handy guide to help keep it all straight!

VFW Auxiliary scholarships for high school students include the Young American Patriotic Art Contest and 3-Dimensional Art Contest. Find more information about these on our website, here: https://vfwauxiliary.org/what-we-do/scholarships-2/

The VFW Auxiliary Continuing Education Scholarship for members and their immediate family can be found here: https://vfwauxiliary.org/scholarships/continuing-education/

While we do promote the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen as part of our Scholarships Program, these are VFW scholarships. If you have questions about them, please reach out to them directly. VFW Post 7383 and Auxiliary held a back to school supply drive. We collected 50 backpacks and supplies. Each backpack had a Buddy Poppy wrapped around the zipper pull. In the front pocket we added a Pledge of Allegiance pencil and card. Members of US Veterans Corp picked up the supplies to be delivered to Ft. Bragg and Cherry Point Schools.

DID YOU KNOW…
Today is Purple Heart Day.

The Purple Heart was created by General George Washington, first President of the United States, in 1782, then called a Badge of Merit. It was awarded to soldiers who performed heroic and notable actions; Washington himself awarded only three.

The Badge of Merit became the Purple Heart in 1932, given to honor those wounded in combat and for commendable actions, and in 1944, it was decided it would be specifically awarded to those who were wounded or killed in action.

Purple Heart Day has been observed since 2014. It is a day to honor, remember and show gratitude for those who have gone above and beyond in the line of duty, which the members of the VFW Auxiliary do today and every day.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR AMAZING AUXILIARY PRESIDENT DONNA WRIGHT!
During the 2025-26 Program year, Donna was asked to be a Department Program Chairman ( a first-time chairmanship for Donna) for the Buddy Poppy National Home. To say Donna was nervous about this is the understatement of the year. Today, at the National Convention in Reno, all that nervousness paid off. As a program chairman, Donna WON a $25 VFW Store gift card and a certificate for the Best promotion of activity and/or event with their VFW Post to educate their community about the VFW Buddy Poppy in our membership division. Then she won for the Department, SECOND PLACE and $100. Donna, you did an amazing job. Never underestimate yourself!
