Steps For Doug

Steps For Doug Our vision is to create an environment focused on celebrating life. Steps for Doug exists to provide more resources to families affected by ALS.

Steps for Doug is a non profit offering a place for everyone in the fight to find a cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Get involved in one of our campaigns or simply spread the word. Our mission is to raise awareness about this horrifying disease by connecting the many ALS organizations across the world. Together we are stronger in the fight. We hope to act as an advocate for individuals and

their families affected by ALS. Ultimately we want to raise enough money to contribute to steps towards a cure. 'Bold goals attract bold people'.

Ben Sawyer received one of our first Douglas MacInnes ALS Scholarships in 2016. Ben attends the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is studying Mechanical Engineering. He undoubtedly takes after his father in two ways: his athleticism, and his fascination with engineering. Another less obvious quality the two share is resilience. Ben witnessed his father transition from an active athlete and coach to being almost completely paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair in his battle with ALS. Due to amazing advances in technology, Ben‘s father was able to work from home using two fingers as an engineer. What impresses us most about Ben Sawyer and his family is their ability to focus on the positive. It is clear how much Ben looks up to his father; with or without ALS. Ben said that, “Watching my dad maintain a positive, loving attitude while losing capability of nearly everything he previously enjoyed doing was exceedingly motivating to me. It has encouraged me to persevere in spite of obstacles, appreciate what I have, and make the most of the life I lead.”

Please help us continue to expand our impact to more students by donating to our Holiday Campaign. 100% of the donations raised by this campaign will be given to deserving students in our 2019 Douglas MacInnes ALS Scholarship cycle.

Isaiah Douglas received one of the 2018 Douglas MacInnes ALS Scholarships. He is studying Composite Materials Engineering at Winona State University. Isaiah has been an advocate for ALS since his father was diagnosed in 2015. He has been a part of several ALS walks, runs, and even snow mobile rides to raise money and awareness for the disease. Isaiah recently traveled to Washington DC to lobby Congress for more resources to help make the cure for ALS a reality. Being the oldest child, Isaiah has had to take on many more responsibilities to help his family in the wake of his father's illness. It has been disheartening for Isaiah to see his father struggling, but his dad’s hope and outlook on life encourages Isaiah and everyone around him. Isaiah is passionate about finding a cure for ALS, and will continue to advocate for the disease and its victims. We are so impressed by Isaiah’s service to others, and his passion for advocating for ALS patients and their families.

Please help us continue to expand our impact to more students by donating to our Holiday Campaign. 100% of the donations raised by this campaign will be given to deserving students in our 2019 Douglas MacInnes ALS Scholarship cycle.

Rosemary Dayton received one of the 2018 Douglas MacInnes ALS Scholarships. She currently attends the University of Nebraska, Lincoln where she is studying interior design with an emphasis in geriatric and health care design. She has had three family members diagnosed with ALS; her grandmother, great aunt and her father. Through her experiences caring for her father, she saw how difficult it could be for disabled people to maneuver through an able-bodied world. Her goal is to become a certified interior designer and use her geriatric knowledge to help design a variety of senior living facilities. Rosemary wants to design spaces that are beautiful yet still accommodate accessibility and universal design. She feels strongly that everyone should feel comfortable, safe and free to use any space as it’s intended. We love Rosemary’s passion for improving the quality of life for disabled persons, and are honored to have her represent the Douglas MacInnes ALS Scholarship!

Happy Holidays Steps for Doug Family!

This Holiday Season we have started a campaign to expand the number and amount of scholarships that we distribute annually. Every year we are blown away by the amount of students affected by ALS who apply to the Douglas MacInnes ALS Scholarship. It is inspiring to learn about their resilience in the face of such a devastating disease. However, we are only able to choose about 2-4 individuals to receive our $2,000 scholarship. After receiving hundreds of applicants each year, we know that the need is greater than our current capacity. Please help us raise $10,000 by Doug's birthday on January 14th to increase our impact! 100% of the donations raised by this campaign will be given to deserving students in our 2019 Douglas MacInnes ALS Scholarship cycle. With our current budget and this push, we KNOW that we will be able to make a huge financial contribution to our recipient's futures! Everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams!

Each week we will be sharing one of the inspiring stories of our incredible past scholarship recipients to show you the immense impact that these scholarships have. We hope you will look forward to these truly humbling stories!

Thank you for your support!!

This holiday season, a donation to Steps for Doug will go towards our annual Douglas MacInnes ALS Scholarship. We are hoping to expand our impact by increasing the amount and number of scholarships distributed.

Our Story

Our vision is to create an environment focused on celebrating life. Steps for Doug exists to provide more resources to families affected by ALS so that they can focus on celebrating life instead of managing the disease. Steps 4 Doug aims to support those affected by an ALS diagnosis by:

  • Providing scholarships for students who's families have been affected by an ALS diagnosis. 12 scholarships have been distributed as of 2018.

  • Supporting Dr. Raymond Roos' ALS research at the University of Chicago to improve patient treatment options. Over $100,000 has been donated to Dr. Roos' work. Over the next 4 years, Steps for Doug has committed to donating $50,000 to further developing treatment options for ALS patients.

  • Distributing Patient Care Grants to families in the Chicago land area impacted by ALS. Patient Care Grans will be launched in 2019!
