If everything stops the moment you take a vacation, you haven't learned that your team is dependent — you've learned exactly where your systems end. That's useful information. The fix isn't working while you're away; it's documenting the handful of decisions only you were making and either delegating them or building a simple process so someone else can make the call.

If you keep over-preparing for rooms other people walk into casually, it's worth naming what's actually happening: research shows women are frequently held to a higher proof-of-competence bar before being trusted with authority, so more prep can be a rational response to that reality — not a personal confidence flaw. The fix isn't always "build more confidence." Sometimes it's building the room, or the network, that judges you on the work you've already done.

If every one-on-one turns into you solving the problem for them, you haven't been coaching — you've been consulting. It feels productive because something gets fixed. But the person leaves the room with an answer instead of a skill, which means the same kind of problem lands back on your desk next month. Try asking what they'd do before you tell them what you'd do.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗔𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Someone on your team asks you a question. You answer it. Three weeks later, someone else asks you the same question, and you answer it again, slightly differently, because you’ve forgotten exactly how you put it the first time. That’s not a communication problem. Everyone understood you perfectly, both times. It’s a problem with where […]

If your team keeps bringing you decisions they could make themselves, the problem usually isn't initiative. It's that no one has actually told them where their authority starts and stops. Employees who don't know the boundaries of their own decision-making default to asking — not because they're incapable, but because guessing wrong feels riskier than checking. Draw the lines and the questions mostly stop.

Pricing based on your competitors is a shortcut that quietly caps your business. It tells you what the market currently tolerates, not what your work is actually worth or what it costs you to deliver it well. A pricing model built on your own numbers — cost, capacity, margin, the value of the outcome you create — holds up even when a competitor changes theirs. Know your numbers before you check anyone else's.

Psychological safety gets mistaken for a soft, feel-good perk. It isn't. It's the operating condition that determines whether your team tells you about a problem in week one or week twelve, after it's expensive. Teams with real psychological safety still get direct feedback and hard conversations — the difference is people believe raising a concern won't cost them standing. That belief is built in small moments, not stated in a values doc.

Here's what nobody explains clearly enough: the skills that get a business to its first real revenue are not the skills that scale it. Hustle, personal salesmanship, doing it yourself faster than you could explain it — that's what gets you to $250K. Past that, the same instincts start working against you, because growth now depends on people and systems that don't run on your personal energy. The job changes. Most founders just don't get the memo.

A dashboard isn't there to make you look organized. It's there so a decision doesn't require you personally reconstructing the story from memory every time. If your team still has to ask you what's going on with a project, a client, or a number, the system isn't failing them — you don't have one yet. Visibility is what lets people act without waiting on you.

Sponsorship and mentorship get used interchangeably, but they do different jobs. A mentor gives you advice in private. A sponsor uses their own credibility to put your name in rooms you're not in — for the promotion, the client introduction, the board seat. Women are statistically more likely to be over-mentored and under-sponsored, which is part of why advice alone doesn't always translate into advancement. If you're building your own network, ask which kind of relationship you're actually in.
