🎨 About the author
Hello. I am Maria, a Ukrainian woman living in Korea. I first came to Korea as an international scholarship student and completed the master's degree in visual design at Hongik University.
At first, I created works related to portraits and still lifes that were based on realism. At the same time, I took up other activities such as modeling and filming for TV. I wanted to express the beauty of Korea in a different way while learning Korean traditional sword dance, gayageum, and samgomu. The work I am doing is a way of reinterpreting and expressing the emotions I am currently feeling in Korea.
🎨 Author's Note
Korea is like an unknown world that has brought peace of mind and happiness to me. Before I came to know this small Asian country, all I knew in my home country was an unruly society ravaged by the horrors of war, which reflected in my eyes a gray hope wrapped in blue light...
For strangers, Seoul is a city of opportunity, whose culture creates a spark of creativity. To a stranger like me, people gave unconditional kindness and love. But I am still a stranger. On the outside, Korea looks gentle, but deeper down it is stern and closed, but far away.
Korea, which has dyed my thinking in an unknown color, still looks at me with a mysterious expression... I also stare, stretch out my hand, and talk to her... But she is still a mystery.
I want to express the things that touch my skin, that see with my eyes, and hear through my ears. I think very simply. I cannot encapsulate or compare the swirling emotions. It's already dizzy enough and drenched in color... in me it's Korean, but not Korean.
Compared to the surface dyed with five colors, Korea has an interior that contains elegance and a modern appearance wherever you go, which causes me to carefully consider each artistic choice. But I am not looking for an answer to this problem right now. You will never find the answer. I just want to express things as I see them.
The mixture of Koreanness and its unique culture and the caricature of unbalanced expression is the most fundamental to me. I select a theme that can represent foreign culture with the lines of Korean tradition and Korea's unique culture as the background. An easy-to-understand and intuitive form soon becomes my subject and is expressed in balance with my emotions.
Expressing the remnants of indescribable emotions inside me on a canvas is literally defined as “expression indescribable” or “visualization of contradiction”. They can be in balance with each other or they can be heterogeneous. Line is line and color is color, and I believe that only when we look at the expression itself, the most intuitively, can we face the mysterious Korea.
1. Korea's historical situation. Sky and sea. A work created while thinking about the characters of the past. War. An expression of feelings of actually experiencing war from my own past, and more distant past.
2. Same but different. Same human, but different race. It is a work for things that are seen but not seen. I am a foreigner living in Korea.. But in the eyes of others, I am just a stranger. But, I am a person. A person like you. The only difference is the place we were born and raised.
3. The image of Korea seen by outsiders is not much different. On the other hand, the image of Korea viewed by Koreans is quite narrow. Strict. The most important doorkeeper. Conversely, the one who guards the most useless door. Do we need a watcher or a commander?
