Divan Center Statement on the Attack at the San Diego Islamic Center

Divan Center is deeply saddened by the tragic attack at the Islamic Center in San Diego.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims, their families, the Islamic Center community, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence.

During this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in San Diego. We reaffirm our commitment to peace, compassion, mutual respect, and the protection of every place of worship.

Hatred and violence have no place in our communities. Together, we choose unity, understanding, and peace.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones, and the entire San Diego community.

Yesterday, Divan Center had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful *Teacher Appreciation Breakfast* 🌿

We came together to celebrate and thank our dedicated teachers for their hard work and commitment. The morning was filled with joy—thoughtful gifts for our teachers, a fun Kahoot game, and lots of laughter!

Guests also enjoyed a rich open-buffet Mediterranean-style breakfast, making the gathering even more special and memorable.

We are grateful for everything our teachers do to inspire and guide our community every day 💛

Highlights from the Divan Center Teachers Week Program

On Saturday, May 2, Divan Center hosted a meaningful and vibrant program in celebration of Teachers Week. With the participation of approximately 120 dedicated teachers, this special gathering once again highlighted the value of the teaching profession and its vital role in society.

The program began with a welcome speech by Divan Center Executive Director Recep Aras, who emphasized the importance of teaching. Following this, school principals Fatih Kandil and Hüseyin Hurmalı inspired attendees by sharing their perspectives on what makes an ideal teacher, along with examples from their own life experiences.

🍽️ A warm and friendly shared meal
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A heartfelt atmosphere with families and children in attendance

Last weekend, the Divan Relief Team took part in Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) basic training. We learned how to prepare for disasters, manage risks, and respond effectively in emergencies—from fire safety and first aid to light search and rescue.

Beyond the technical skills, it was a powerful reminder of the importance of teamwork, coordination, and community.

We’ll keep learning, growing, and staying ready—because small steps today can make a big difference tomorrow.

A beautiful evening of unity and inspiration ✨

White Plains United Methodist Church hosted the 5th Celebration of the Divine through Music program, bringing together diverse communities through the universal language of music.

We were honored to have music groups from Divan Center, Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, Christ the King Lutheran Church, and the Satya Sai Baba Community share their talents and spirit. Each performance reflected the richness of different traditions while highlighting the harmony that connects us all.

As the Divan Advocacy Committee, we had the honor of visiting Senator Jim Burgin.

During our visit to Senator Burgin’s office, the Center Advocacy team shared information about our ongoing programs and community services.

We sincerely thank him for his warm hospitality and kind approach. During our meeting, Senator Burgin expressed his appreciation for Divan Center’s efforts in supporting community integration.

At the end of our visit, we presented him with a traditional ceramic plate as a token of appreciation and commemorated this meaningful meeting with a group photo.

Senator Burgin, a humble leader who lives his faith with sincerity, reflects through his genuine demeanor that he values people simply for being human and sees his faith as an integral part of his identity. He exemplifies a public servant dedicated to contributing to the growth and well-being of his community.

Volunteers from the Divan Center Relief Committee successfully delivered our food donations to Holly Springs Food Cupboard.

We are proud to share that we donated 310.6 pounds of food, helping support families in need within our local community. During our visit, we had the opportunity to meet with Executive Director Sara Haggar, who expressed sincere appreciation and emphasized their interest in building a closer relationship with our organization.

This experience was not only meaningful but also inspiring, reminding us of the power of unity, service, and compassion.

We look forward to continuing our efforts and participating in future community events together.

Last night, Christ the King Lutheran Church graciously hosted the Divan Center community for a beautiful Ramadan Iftar dinner. 🌙🤝

It was a warm evening of fellowship, bringing together friends from different backgrounds to share a meal and meaningful conversations. We also enjoyed a wonderful performance by the music group Cardinals, adding a special touch to the night.

Last night we hosted a meaningful Ramadan Iftar Dinner at the Divan Center, bringing together friends in the spirit of faith and action. 🌙🤝

We were honored to welcome guests from the Focolare.org Movement and the As Salaam Islamic Center of Raleigh sharing an evening of reflection, connection, and community.

Together, we were reminded that faith is not only something we believe, but something we live—through compassion, service, and building bridges with one another.
