United Strings of Color

United Strings of Color The United Strings of Color formed in 2018 to inspire and encourage all young people to pursue classical music.

In keeping with the history of the moment, the current group is immersed in making a difference. The United Strings of Color is an outreach project that addresses racial disparity in classical music and delves into the intersection between societal issues and music. During its four seasons, the group has studied pieces by under-represented composers, such as the African Americans Florence Price, A

nthony Kelly, DBR and Undine Smith Moore; played music with African connections; and lent their voice to social justice awareness by performing Violin Vigils. United Strings of Color has performed at Raleigh's African American Cultural Festival, with the Durham Symphony, for the local Omega Psi Phi Quiz Bowl, for the Raleigh-Wake Chapter of Jack and Jill, at the North Carolina Museum of Art, for the African American Cultural Celebration at the North Carolina Museum of History, for the Durham Rotary Club, for Triangle Park Links Incorporated, at area churches, at PS 118 Art Gallery in Durham, and for the Raleigh's Boys and Girls Club. The group has also been featured as a My Brothers Keeper partner.

Next weekend the North Carolina Symphony will be performing the ever-popular Symphony No. 9 by Antonin Dvorak. Dvorak wrote this work “From the New World” when he was the Director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City. Less known is that a student at the Conservatory, Harry Burleigh, was the primary reason Dvorak became so well acquainted with the music developed by enslaved Africans. Mark your calendar for February 28, 2026, when United Strings of Color will tell the story of Burleigh and Dvorak and two other partnerships that elevated Black classical music. This project is made possible by a grant from United Arts Wake County and support from the Town of Apex.
