Excuse me while I go cry..
Getting to photograph the 17-year-old holding this graduation cap was truly one of the most special shoots Iโve gotten to be a part of. As a , I know the struggle of being in school while drowning in trauma. It was an absolute honor to capture her senior photos and make her session exactly how sheโs dreamt of it to go!
Nevaeh bravely was willing to share her photos and words in hopes of inspiring others. She was in and out of the system since being in 5th grade and was reunified with her family last year. Constant changes, instability, and missing out on her younger siblingsโs early childhood moments caused deep pain and turmoil within her.
In the face of hardships, she has consistently chosen to pursue healing and to live her life to bring hope to others. I was blown away by her maturity and wisdom at her young age, a maturity that is familiar to because Iโve found it within myself and so many other survivors. I canโt wait to see the greatness that lies ahead for her because sheโs absolutely deserving of it all.
When asked what she wants others to know about being in foster care, these are the words she offered:
โBeing in the foster care system has taught me that any building can be a house but it takes the people inside of it to make a home.
To anyone currently in the system, use the resources provided to you! Some people do genuinely want to help and you need to let them if you don't want your current situation to define your future.โ
50% of foster youth graduate from high school โ and sheโs now a part of that number who is paving the way for others. Sheโs a living example that youth whoโve experienced being in the system are capable of anything. Please remember this when you look at those of us who make up this population. Anything is possible!
