It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of retired Sheriff Lane Carter. Sheriff Carter began his career with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office on October 16, 1978 as a deputy.
In 1981, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the Patrol Division.
In 1987, he was promoted again to the rank of Lieutenant, and assigned to the Investigations Division.
In 1990, Lane Carter was promoted to the rank of Captain, and then Major in 1995 by Sheriff James Wise.
In 1997, he was selected by newly appointed Sheriff Frank Johnson to be his Chief Deputy and continued in that role as the Chief Deputy when Sheriff Frank Johnson won election in 1998.
In 2002, Lane Carter ran for, and won, the office of Sheriff and served as the Sheriff of Moore County for more than ten years.
His service to the citizens of our great County was nothing less than impeccable, as he dedicated 35 years of his life to Moore County and the law enforcement profession.
He was an exceptional colleague, a true mentor, and most of all a great friend!
We at the Moore County Sheriff’s Office will dearly miss Sheriff Lane Carter.
Please keep his wife, Anita, and the entire Carter family in your thoughts and prayers.

Sheriff Ronnie Fields

Re: Lowering of the US and NC Flags to Half-Staff on Friday, May 15, in Honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day

Governor Roy Cooper today ordered all US and North Carolina flags at state facilities be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, May 15, 2020 in observance of National Peace Officers Memorial Day. This day recognizes the many men and women of law enforcement who lost their lives or who were injured in the line of duty.

Statement from Governor Roy Cooper:

“The men and women we remember today gave their lives to protect ours. Because of that we can never properly thank these brave officers. But we can honor their lives and their memories by pausing to reflect on their contributions.”

As a show of respect, individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the duration of time indicated.

Please note, all North Carolina flag announcements are issued in accordance to regulations outlined in the US Flag Code.

The MCLEO would like to send a huge THANK YOU to the Ambrozewski family, owners of Anytime Fitness Southern Pines & Pinehurst, for the fabulous home cooked meal.

Owners Tristan and Hannah have been huge supporters of the Moore County Law Enforcement Officers Association, they generously donated meals to the association during our monthly meetings, not to mention the yearly Lift Off competition where all funds raised are donated to the MCLEOA, we can not thank them enough for everything they do for the MCLEO and their community.

A message to Moore County citizens from Sheriff Ronnie Fields:

I am pleased to announce that on Tuesday, February 18th, 2020, at their regular meeting, the Moore County Board of Commissioners plan to adopt a resolution declaring support for the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Further, as the duly elected Sheriff of Moore County, I announce to all that I am personally and professionally a full and complete proponent of the 2nd Amendment and all of its guarantees.
There have been bits of misleading information about this resolution that have recently surfaced on social media. I know, for a fact, that the Board of Commissioners have not been stalling or delaying action on this issue in an effort to avoid its acceptance. Rather, the Commissioners have been very diligent in their efforts to ensure that they were doing the right thing for Moore County. As your Sheriff, I enjoy a wonderful working relationship with the Board of Commissioners and it remains a huge honor to serve all of the fine people of Moore County.
I urge each of you to remain active in your local government. Take the time to do research on matters of concern to you. I encourage you to come to the Commissioners meetings and sign up for the public speaking portion if you have ideas that you would like to share.
