Recess can be so much more than a break from class. When designed intentionally, it can become a skill-building, community-building part of the school day.

When our experts evaluate a school’s recess, here are a few things they look for: boundaries, conflict resolution, communication, engagement, adult involvement, and student leadership.

The American Academy of Pediatrics renewed its support for recess this year, and the message is clear: recess belongs in the school day.

Multiple breaks. At least 20 minutes each. Never taken away as punishment.

Recess is still unprotected in most states. Only DC and 12 states require it, and how much kids actually get usually comes down to a district decision.

Playworks knows that through play, kids learn, grow, connect, and have fun. And while we believe in the power of play anywhere, getting outdoors and offline provides the best atmosphere to help kids experience these benefits.

From the classroom to the playground 💙

Jonathan Louis Furniture Company made a big impact at 112th Street Elementary with a 2-part beautification effort. From refreshing the teacher’s lounge to creating staff appreciation bags and adding new playground visuals, their support brought care and energy to the entire school community.

One of the most meaningful moments was their time spent connecting with the school’s Junior Coaches, experiencing firsthand the leadership and energy they bring to the playground each day.

Jefferson Elementary brought families onto the playground for a recent Parent Play Day with Playworks.

More than 45 parents joined students during recess, with a standout moment being a parents vs. students castle ball game that had everyone moving, laughing, and connecting.

Thank you to our AmeriCorps Coaches, Principal Estrada, and the Jefferson team for creating such a welcoming experience for families.

Playworks had the opportunity to support students at Marquez Elementary with a recess experience centered on connection, movement, and joy 💙.

We are grateful to the Will & Cara Catching Hope Foundation for supporting the Marquez school community and helping create moments of care and encouragement for students.

Through group icebreakers, games, fun cheers, and an incredible team of Playworks trainers, students experienced the power of play in action.

We're honored to be part of such a meaningful day and to partner in bringing positive moments to the school community.
