From classrooms and community centers to cultural celebrations across Nevada, Harold Akyeampong has dedicated his life to sharing African music, traditions, and the power of connection.

As a Nevada Heritage Fellow, Harold’s work extends far beyond performance—he creates spaces where people of all ages can learn, belong, and discover the richness of cultural heritage through rhythm, storytelling, and community.

In this short documentary, hear from students, colleagues, and community members whose lives have been impacted by Harold’s generosity, mentorship, and passion for preserving tradition.

What stories do Nevada’s rural landscapes hold over time? 🌾

Our Rural Moments: Snapshots from the Nevada Folklife Archives highlight everyday life in rural Nevada between 1985 and 1989. These photographs, taken by Nevada Arts Council folklorists, document ranching, gathering places, and landscapes shaped by tradition and daily life.

The Nevada Arts Council’s Folklife Program preserves and shares the living traditions of communities across the state. These images remind us that while tools and technology change, many traditions continue to evolve while staying rooted in place and history.

Nevada stories, told by Nevadans 🎧

The America250 Nevada Our Nevada Stories podcast is now airing.

Over the past eight months, Nevada Arts Council State Folklorist Brad McMullen has traveled across the state collecting lived experiences from Nevadans about their communities, histories, and everyday life. The result is a living archive that captures the personal, entertaining, and inspiring moments shaping Nevada today and preserves them as part of our shared cultural history.

New episodes air weekly on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, as well as on Nevada Public Radio in Southern Nevada and KUNR Public Radio in Northern Nevada, from May 28 through July 2.

Each episode explores a different side of Nevada life, from becoming a Nevadan and life on the land to gaming, changing communities, and the stories that could only happen here.
