What an incredible first week!

We want to take a moment to thank everyone who has followed along, shared our posts, and offered such encouraging feedback as we launched our new storytelling series, “A Day in the Life of a CASA: The First 30 Days.”

Our goal was simple: to invite our community into the world of CASA advocacy and show what it really looks like when an ordinary person steps forward to make an extraordinary difference in a child’s life.

And we’re just getting started!

Every Monday and Wednesday, we’ll continue following our fictional CASA volunteer as she navigates her first 30 days of advocacy—the excitement, the uncertainty, the questions, the relationships, and the meaningful moments along the way.

But we also wanted to share another side of CASA.

Because there’s so much more happening behind the scenes than most people realize.

That’s why we’re introducing something new for Fridays: BEYOND THE CASE FILE!

Each Friday, we’ll take you beyond the courtroom, the case reports, and the visits to showcase some of the additional ways CASA of Carson City supports children and families.

From our Foster Kids Closet and back-to-school programs to community partnerships, clothing drives, handmade quilts, and the incredible generosity of local organizations, we want you to see how our community comes together to help children in foster care.

And what better way to begin than with something very close to our hearts?

❤️ BEYOND THE CASE FILE

Sometimes Advocacy Looks Like a Winter Coat.

When people think about CASA, they often picture an advocate visiting a child, talking with a social worker, or preparing information for the Court.

And that’s certainly part of what we do.

But sometimes advocating for a child means noticing something much simpler.

A child needs shoes.

A teenager needs a winter jacket.

School starts Monday, and someone needs a backpack.

A little one has arrived unexpectedly in the care of relatives who weren’t planning on becoming caregivers that day.

At CASA of Carson City, our Foster Kids Closet helps us respond to some of those immediate needs.

Through the incredible generosity of our community partners and donors, we are fortunate to keep brand-new clothing, socks, shoes, winter coats, hats, backpacks, school supplies, books, toys, games, handmade quilts, and other children’s items available when they are needed.

Our primary role isn’t to furnish or equip foster homes.

Our role is to advocate for children.

But advocacy means paying attention.

It means recognizing that while we work toward long-term stability, safety, and permanency, children also have immediate, everyday needs.

And when a child we’ve encountered through this work needs something as simple as a warm jacket, a new pair of shoes, or school supplies, having these resources available can make a difficult day just a little easier.

And the very best part?

Our community makes this possible.

Every jacket hanging in our closet, every backpack waiting for the first day of school, and every handmade quilt ready to wrap around a child represents someone in our community who decided that children in foster care matter.

Our donors, community partners, local businesses, and volunteers make these resources possible. Their generosity allows us to respond with compassion when unexpected needs arise.

Sometimes the smallest gestures make a meaningful difference.

A warm coat.

A new pair of shoes.

A backpack filled with supplies.

A quilt made with love.

Because every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and cared for.

We’re inviting you to find out!

Throughout October, CASA of Carson City is taking our community behind the scenes through a special storytelling series, “A Day in the Life of a CASA: The First 30 Days.”

Follow our fictional CASA volunteer as she navigates her first appointment, meets with social workers and caregivers, prepares for her first visit with a child, and discovers what it truly means to be an advocate.

We’ll share the excitement, the nervousness, the questions, the challenges, and the little moments that make this work so meaningful.

❤️ What Is CASA of Carson City?

Established in 1986, CASA of Carson City is a court-based volunteer advocacy program serving children involved in the child welfare system.

Our trained volunteers are appointed by the Court to advocate for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse or neglect.

CASA volunteers work alongside social workers, caregivers, educators, attorneys, and other professionals to help ensure that children’s voices, needs, and well-being remain at the center of decisions affecting their lives.

From monitoring educational and medical needs to supporting stability and permanency, CASA volunteers provide an independent perspective and, most importantly, a consistent presence during an uncertain time in a child’s life.

You don’t have to be a social worker, attorney, or expert to become a CASA.

You simply need compassion, commitment, and a willingness to show up for a child.

The First 30 Days — Our Story Has Begun! ❤️

This week, we introduced you to our fictional CASA volunteer as she began her journey as a Court Appointed Special Advocate.

On Monday, she received the exciting news that she’d been appointed to her very first case. We shared how CASA carefully considers each volunteer’s strengths, experiences, and comfort level when matching them with a child.

On Wednesday, we took you behind the scenes as she met with her CASA Director, reviewed important case information, asked questions, and began preparing for her first meeting with the social worker.

But why are we sharing this journey?

Because we want our community to see what being a CASA volunteer actually looks like.

Not just the courtroom appearances or the reports. We want to share the nervousness, the excitement, the learning experiences, the little victories, and the meaningful relationships that make CASA advocacy so important.

You don’t have to be an expert to become a CASA. You just have to be willing to learn, listen, and show up for a child.

And we’re only getting started!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CASA: THE FIRST 30 DAYS

Throughout October, we’re following the journey of a fictional new CASA volunteer through her first 30 days as a Court Appointed Special Advocate.

CHAPTER ONE — PART TWO: LET’S GET YOU READY

Monday, our new CASA received the news:

She’s been appointed.

Today, it’s time to get ready.

And here’s something we want every prospective CASA volunteer to know:

You don’t receive a court appointment and suddenly have to figure everything out by yourself.

Before our new advocate ever knocks on a foster home’s door, there’s work to do—and CASA staff will be there to walk through it with her.

She meets with her CASA Director.

First come a few important housekeeping items. Confidentiality forms are signed. Transportation, social media, photography and other program policies are reviewed.

Then we open the case.

Together, we begin reviewing the information available to our advocate: court orders, placement information, CPS reports and other case documents.

Who is the child’s social worker?

Who are the parents and caregivers?

Who are the attorneys?

Where is the child placed?

What has brought this family to this point?

What questions do we already have?

Our new CASA takes notes. Lots of notes.

Some things begin making sense.

Other things lead to even more questions.

And that’s okay.

A CASA isn’t expected to walk into a case knowing everything.

Our advocate’s job right now is to learn, listen and begin putting together the pieces.

But documents can only tell us so much.

It’s time to talk to someone who knows what’s happening with this family right now.

So CASA sends an introductory email to the assigned social worker:

“I’d like to introduce you to the newly appointed CASA on this case…”

And we ask to schedule a meeting.

Our advocate closes her notebook.

Her first staffing is officially on the horizon.

Throughout October, we’re following the journey of a fictional new CASA volunteer through her first 30 days as a Court Appointed Special Advocate.

The people and images in this series are fictional to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the children and families we serve—but the experiences, responsibilities, and moments you’ll follow are inspired by the real work of CASA volunteers every day.

So, let’s begin.

CHAPTER ONE — PART ONE: YOU’VE BEEN APPOINTED

Her phone buzzes.

The court order has been signed.

She’s officially been appointed to her first case as a Court Appointed Special Advocate.

For a moment, she just stares at the screen.

Excited? Absolutely.

Proud? Definitely.

Nervous?

…Maybe just a little.

“Okay. What happens now?”

But before our new CASA ever received that notification, an important conversation had already taken place.

She sat down with her CASA Director and talked about the children who were waiting for advocates—and where she might be a good fit.

Because assigning a CASA isn’t simply about filling an empty spot.

We talk about the age of the child, the circumstances of the case, the volunteer’s experiences and strengths, and—just as importantly—what the volunteer feels comfortable taking on.

Sometimes a volunteer’s career, hobbies or life experiences may create an unexpected connection. Someone who has spent years working on cars might have something wonderful in common with a teenager who dreams of becoming a mechanic. Another volunteer may feel much more confident working with a younger child.

There is no “perfect” CASA.

Our volunteers bring their own personalities, experiences, interests and strengths to this work. Part of our job is helping them find a case where they feel prepared to begin.

And now we’ve found hers.

The Judge has signed the order.

She’s officially a CASA.

So…

Eaglemark Savings Bank Helps Northern Nevada Children in Foster Care Start the School Year with Confidence

CARSON CITY, Nev. — CASA of Carson City is extending its heartfelt gratitude to longtime community partner Eaglemark Savings Bank, a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson Financial Services, following an extraordinary backpack and school supply drive benefiting children in foster care throughout Northern Nevada.

Through the generosity and dedication of the Eaglemark team, 105 backpacks were collected, filled with school supplies, and donated for children ranging from elementary through high school.

Brightly colored backpacks in reds, greens, blues, and more arrived at the CASA office overflowing with everything a student could need to begin the school year prepared and excited. Spiral notebooks, composition books, folders, pencils, colored pencils, crayons, and other classroom essentials were carefully packed inside each one.

But the donation represented far more than backpacks and school supplies.

For a child in foster care, the beginning of a new school year can come with challenges that extend well beyond the classroom. Some children may be beginning the year in a new home, attending a new school, or entering a classroom where they do not yet know anyone. Amid those uncertainties, something as simple as having a brand-new backpack filled with their own school supplies can provide a meaningful sense of normalcy, belonging, and confidence.

“One of the things we always want for the children we serve is the opportunity to simply be kids,” said Melanie McCormick, Executive Director of CASA of Carson City. “On the first day of school, they should be thinking about seeing old friends, making new ones, meeting their teachers, and wondering what the new school year will bring—not worrying about whether they have a backpack, pencils, notebooks, or the supplies everyone else is carrying. Eaglemark Savings Bank gave our children that opportunity.”

Eaglemark Savings Bank and Harley-Davidson Financial Services have been valued partners of CASA of Carson City for many years, consistently demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to children and families within the foster care system.

Their support extends beyond financial generosity. It is reflected in the time their employees give, the care they put into their efforts, and the compassion behind each project they undertake.

“When those backpacks came through our doors, you could see the time and thought that went into them,” McCormick said. “They weren’t simply donated—they were gathered, filled, organized, and prepared with care so that we could turn around and place them directly into the hands of children who needed them. To see backpacks literally overflowing with supplies was incredibly moving. This is a group of people who continually shows our children, through their actions, that their community sees them, values them, and wants them to succeed.”

CASA of Carson City believes every child deserves to enter the classroom feeling prepared, capable, and confident. While children in foster care may carry circumstances their classmates cannot see, on the first day of school they deserve the same excitement, nervous anticipation, new friendships, and fresh beginnings as every other child.

Because of Eaglemark Savings Bank and the employees of Harley-Davidson Financial Services, children throughout Northern Nevada were able to begin this school year with backpacks on their shoulders, supplies in their hands, and one less worry to carry with them.

“There are simply not enough words to express our gratitude,” McCormick added. “Eaglemark Savings Bank and Harley-Davidson Financial Services have stood beside CASA and the children we serve for years. Their generosity is phenomenal, but it is their heart that continues to mean the most. We are incredibly fortunate to call them our community partners and our friends.”

CASA of Carson City extends its deepest appreciation to every Eaglemark Savings Bank and Harley-Davidson Financial Services employees who donated, collected, organized, packed, and helped make this year’s backpack drive possible.

🍎 Welcome Back to School, Carson City! 📚

Today marks the first day of a brand-new school year!

There are sure to be plenty of nerves and excitement, big smiles when old friends find each other again, and new friendships just waiting to begin. To all of our students: walk through those doors feeling confident, strong, and ready for everything this new year has to offer. Believe in yourselves, be kind to one another, ask questions, try new things—and remember that every new school year is a fresh beginning.

To our incredible teachers, school staff, and administrators: thank you for the countless hours of preparation that happen long before the first bell rings. Your hard work, patience, creativity, and dedication help make that first day feel welcoming and exciting for our children.

And to all the parents and caregivers watching those backpacks disappear through the school doors this morning—we know there are a few nerves on your side, too. Whether it’s the very first day of kindergarten or the beginning of senior year, sending them off is always a little bittersweet.

From all of us at CASA of Carson City, we wish the students, families, teachers, and staff of the Carson City School District a safe, successful, and wonderful 2026–2027 school year! 💙

👀 Something amazing just happened at CASA of Carson City…

Our office received an incredible delivery this week, and we could not be more excited! 🎒📚

Rows of backpacks 🎒, school supplies ✏, and smiling faces 👪 are filling our office, all because of the kindness and generosity of an amazing community partner. While we have to keep their identity a surprise for just a little while longer, trust us when we say… this act of generosity is going to make a real difference for children in foster care as they prepare for the new school year. 🏫 🍎

We can’t wait to share the full story and recognize the incredible individuals behind this gift. Until then, here’s a little sneak peek at some of the excitement happening at CASA!
