This week's presenter, Jacquin Webb. Jacquin shared his experience reentering the outside world, after being incarcerated for 20 years, being devoid of any guidance. This compelled him to start gathering information for himself and then to pass this on to his fellow inmates as they were released. More information accrued, life skills training classes evolved, Reconnect 180, nonprofit 501(c)3 came to be!

Tuesday the 26th of May, our RYE student Artur Fernandes shared a fabulous PowerPoint presentation of highlights of his year here in the USA. Artur jumped in with both feet! Immersing himself in the high school experience by joining various athletic teams and earning his varsity letter: Tennis, wrestling for a bit, swimming too! He attended many social, cultural events like Scream Halloween-Haunted House, Nevada State Parade, LA family Thanksgiving, Senior Prom, trip to Yosemite with fellow RYE students. He even treated us to a little taste of Brazil by working with Heather, our caterer, to create a Brazilian themed lunch menu! His enthusiastic personality has shined throughout his stay in the US and he will be missed by all!

This week's presenter, Eric Brooks. Eric is the Arts & Culture Program Manager for Visit Carson City. He told us all about the region wide arts and culture trail, Dust & Wonder Trail. The railroad spike has been selected to be the trail's signature wayfinding sculptural element. The centerpiece of the trail is DRIVEN-A Monument to Connection, a 69' tall (the V&T railroad started in 1869) steel interpretive railroad spike sculpture. Thirty-one smaller interpretive railroad spikes have been commissioned to be placed along the trail. They are in the final phase of fundraising to complete this project. If you want to learn more about this project or want to be a part of bringing this historic landmark to life, contact Eric Brooks at Visit Carson City.

Rotary's teacher of the month, Jackie Bennett. Ms. Bennett has been an educator for 17yrs; for the last ten years she has been a third-grade teacher at Bordewich Bray Elementary School. She described attending an educational conference in 2025 which transformed her teaching style. Her previous instructional approach was one of the teacher being the holder of all knowledge. Her new method is to be a facilitator of a learning experience where the students are empowered to collaborate in creating curriculum. This has elevated the positive energy level in the classroom, the students and Ms. Bennett! Rotary applauds Jackie Bennett's innovative spirit.

Yesterday's presenter, Ms. Amy Riddle. Ms. Riddle is a Science and STEM teacher at Eagle Valley Middle School and the winner of a $5000 Rotary Educational Grant. Amy's presentation was highly educational; thankfully she managed to impart this complex information in an accessible and entertaining fashion! Her F.L.O.W. project is an initiative to establish a permanent water quality monitoring system on the Carson River. It is an amazing endeavor that engages students, with hands-on scientific process, to become direct stewards of their local watershed and aware of the global ecosystem. The Rotary Club of Carson City is extremely proud of the work Amy & Dan Riddle are doing!

Rotary Club Senior Spotlight: Carson High's Julia Aquino. Julia is described in her bio as being positive, determined & bubbly. Superintendent Fueling looked to her as he read this repeating "bubbly" several times. Julia looked back at him and said, "Yes, Bubbly!" Superintendent Fueling, smiling broadly, amended the description to "bubbly with attitude!" Her playful, kindhearted and resolute attitude will serve her well as she sets out on her future endeavors.

Rotary Club Senior Spotlight: Jesus Rodriguez Ortega.
Two and a half years ago Jesus was living in Mexico with his mother; then everything changed, his mother died. Jesus moved to Carson to live with his brother and began attending CHS. He knew very little English but that didn't deter him. Through online and in-person classes he learned English, tenaciously pursued his academic goals and is set to graduate this spring. All this while working a full-time job as the manager at the MacDonalds in South Carson! His next mission, attending WNC to study welding. No doubt he will excel in his studies at WNC!
