On Sunday, January 18, our community will gather for a Candlelight Vigil to honor and remember people who have died in custody due to violence, neglect, or systemic failure.

Across Nevada, families continue to grieve loved ones lost while under the care and control of the state and local systems. This vigil is a space to speak their names, hold their memories, and stand in solidarity with those still seeking truth, accountability, and healing.

🕯 Candlelight Vigil for Lives Lost in Custody
📍 Believe Plaza
🕓 Gather at 4:00 PM
🗣 Speaker program & community speak-out begin at 5:00 PM
⏰ Vigil runs 4:00–6:00 PM

Candles will be provided but please bring photos, signs, and anything that helps you honor your loved one.
This vigil is about remembrance, collective grief, and honoring lives that mattered.

All are welcome. If you loved someone who died in custody, knew someone who did, or are carrying that loss with you, please come.

Today would have been Malik’s 25th birthday.

Instead of celebrating the life he was growing into, we’re remembering a young man whose life was cut short after enduring abuse and suffering while in custody. Malik died from his injuries. He should be here. He should be learning and growing older with the people who loved him.

Those who knew Malik best remember more than what happened to him. They remember who he was.

His cousin remembers Malik as a gentle giant with a big heart—kind beneath a tough exterior. She misses his laugh, his silly jokes that turned into deep conversations, and his drive to grow. She wrote how proud they were of who he was becoming, adding, “It breaks my heart to know the abuse you endured in your final days, but I pray your life brings meaningful change to our world.”

Malik’s life mattered. His joy mattered. His future mattered.

On what should have been his 25th birthday, we honor Malik by telling the truth, by remembering him as the full human being he was, and by continuing to demand accountability so that no more families have to grieve like this.

Happy 25th birthday, Malik.
You were loved. You are missed.
And you should still be here. 🕯️💙

On January 13 at 10am, the Interim Judiciary Committee will be talking about Viapath at NDOC under Agenda Item 6, and this is a chance for people directly impacted to speak up.

If you or your loved one have had ongoing issues with Viapath, especially around:
* High costs (not phone minute pricing)
* Poor service or low quality
* Streaming that doesn’t work
* Constant tech problems

🔘This is the moment to make sure lawmakers hear it directly from you.🔘

Ways to participate:
✔️ Go in person
✔️ Call in and give public comment
✔️ Send in a comment by email

A quick heads up:
* Viapath comments need to be shared during the first public comment period and should mention Agenda Item 6.
* If you want to talk about anything else, you’ll need to wait for the second public comment period.

🔶To help us keep track and support folks, comment with a GIF if you plan to participate in any way.🔶

Your voice helps turn everyday frustrations into something that can’t be ignored.

This , we remember MALIK through the words of someone who knew him in everyday life behind bars — someone who valued the simple moments of seeing him, greeting him, and sharing conversation about family and how life was going.

What they miss most is his presence — the reassurance of knowing he was there, the steadiness he brought into ordinary spaces, the connection that lived even in brief encounters.

They describe MALIK as genuine. Generous. Loyal. Polite, yet firm in his values. Someone who treated others with respect. Someone people trusted. Someone whose character could be felt.

And there is one memory that stays with them above all others:

“His smile is something I will never forget.”

They speak of him as disciplined. Strong. Deeply committed to the people he stood beside. Someone growing, becoming more grounded, recovering from setbacks and moving forward with determination.

To them, MALIK was a person of potential, responsibility, and quiet leadership — someone whose presence mattered.
And now, that presence is gone.

MALIK’s life was cut short. He should still be here — sharing conversation, staying connected to the people he cared about, and continuing the path he was working to shape.

Today, we honor who MALIK was to the people who knew him —

the loyalty he carried,
the strength they saw in him,
the smile they still hold in memory.

MALIK is loved.
MALIK is missed.

And his presence lives on in the hearts of those he touched.

A Little New Year Joy ✨

We hope everyone is having a gentle and hopeful start to the new year. Thanks to your kindness, two girls in our community were able to experience the joy of Christmas.

Their mom shared that her youngest had never had a bike before, and now she’s learning to ride for the very first time. Her older daughter is loving every mile on her new electric bike!

Your generosity turned a hard season into a moment of hope!

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, and showed up for this family.

2025 ends today.

This year was stitched together from love and grief, long nights and brave voices, hard truths and steady hope.

We witnessed loss, injustice, and the weight of systems that harm. We also witnessed families carrying one another, people inside organizing for humanity, and a community that refused to be quiet.

Our strength this year wasn’t loud — it was enduring.

As the year closes, we honor every story shared, every letter written, every mile driven for a visit, every call for help, every step toward change.

In the year ahead, Return Strong will continue to stand where it matters most:

Beside people inside.
Beside their families.
Beside the truth.

We step into the new year with courage, love, and commitment. We’re not finished. 💛

This we honor MALIK through the words of his father — who describes his son as Light. A light that lifted people. A light that stayed with those who crossed his path.

To his father, MALIK was joyful, curious, and always wanting to learn more about life. He took pride in helping others. He loved talking through big decisions and asking for guidance.
Malik carried forgiveness in a way that changed the people around him.

What his father misses most are their father to son conversations — the talks about purpose, growth, and the future. The chance to keep watching his son become the man he was striving to be.

MALIK’s life was cut short.

And a father now carries a grief that no parent should have to carry — love without a future, memories without more time.

Today, we hold space for a father mourning his son.

For the light he saw in him.
For the bond that remains, even in loss.

MALIK is loved.
MALIK is missed.

And his light lives on through those who knew him.

For many in our community, the holidays don’t feel complete. There is an empty chair where a loved one should be, a phone call instead of a hug, a visit instead of a reunion. Separation caused by incarceration or detention leaves a quiet ache that follows us through the season.

This year carries even more weight as our community moves through grief and uncertainty. We are holding close every family feeling that absence and pain. You are not alone.

In the middle of this hurt, we’re choosing hope
hope for healing instead of harm,
hope for justice that reunites families,
hope for the day our loved ones come home and our families are whole again.

To everyone with someone behind bars or in detention: we see you, we honor your love, and we stand with you through every season.

From our Return Strong family to yours, we are with you — today and always

It is with a heavy heart that we share that Jodi’s partner, Kevin, passed away unexpectedly yesterday.

For those who may not know, it is Kevin’s story, and the mountains he had to overcome on his path to freedom, that lit the spark in Jodi to build what is now Return Strong. Their love changed the trajectory of her life and, in many ways, gave us this community today.

Kevin was deeply proud to be part of Return Strong. While his story on earth ended far too soon, his legacy will continue to live on through the work of Return Strong and the lives it touches.

As we have come together for so many families before, we now ask our community to come together for Jodi as she faces unexpected and significant expenses following Kevin’s passing.

You can support her during this incredibly difficult time by donating using the link below. Your generosity is a meaningful way to surround Jodi with the same care, strength, and compassion she has so freely given to others. 🤍

We know many of you will want to share your love and condolences with Jodi. Please feel free to leave a note for her in the comments below. We will share these messages with Jodi so she can read through them in her own time, as she feels able.
