This section was the first section of the Historic V&T Trail paved and developed in the early 2010s by Carson City. This section runs for about ¾ of a mile behind Western Nevada College , and follows a section of the historic right-of-way of the V&T, which originally connected Virginia City to Carson city in 1869 and reached Reno by 1872.

The HVTT project seeks to connect all the missing pieces of the V&T line into a multi-use, paved trail connecting the five Northern Nevada counties the V&T operated in.

Franktown Depot was a vital stop on the V&T line between Reno and Carson City, and in its heyday, was a sawmill hub, providing timber for the Comstock Lode mines. The yellow line in this photo shows the historic alignment of the railroad with today’s Franktown, located in Washoe Valley.

Rules of the multi-use trails:
Just like driving, multi-use trails work best when everyone follows the same pattern.
Stay to the right side of the trail
Pass on the left when it’s safe to do so
It keeps traffic flowing smoothly and reduces the chance of close calls.

The Historic Virginia & Truckee Trail project follows a model that has already worked in communities across the country. Connected trail systems consistently generate visitor spending, support local jobs, and help strengthen small-town economies. See how the Great Allegheny Passage found $18.5 million in annual economic impact and 367 jobs along its 150 miles from Cumberland, Maryland to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania!

The 1910 McKeen Motor Car was taken out of service in 1945 after competing with the new concrete highway built in the 1920s and 30s. The car became diners in various locations around Carson City, then became a plumbing shop in 1960.

The car was donated to the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City in 1997, where it underwent a major restoration, and was brought back into service in 2010.

When people can safely move between communities, they stop more often. They grab coffee. They eat lunch. They book a hotel room. They wander into local shops. That’s how trails create economic impact one small business at a time.

Our proposed trail covers areas of Washoe, Carson City, Storey, Lyon and Douglas Counties. Don’t miss this train! Learn more about our project at https://www.vandttrail.org/

To honor those who sacrificed it all for our freedom, we hope you are out walking, cycling or riding your horse somewhere amazing today and remembering all who served.

The Decline of the Railroad
As automobiles became more common, the need for rail began to decline.
Highways were built. Cars and trucks took over. By the mid-1900s, much of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad had been dismantled.
The tracks disappeared, but the corridor never really lost its purpose.
It just waited for a new one.
