Power of the Purse by The Community Foundation of West Georgia The Power of the Purse Fund is an organization of giving specifically for women of Carroll, Haralson and Heard counties.

It offers donors the opportunity to join other women in donating funds to serve women and children in need in West Georgia. d in support of women’s and children’s initiatives. Many of the Foundation’s donors are women who have been active in the philanthropic community for years. Power of the Purse offers an opportunity to further increase the impact of women giving in our region. Anyone can be a member of the Power of the Purse Fund with an annual pledge of $100. Throughout the year the Power of the Purse Fund sponsors opportunities for members to meet to learn more about philanthropic opportunities in the West Georgia region. All members are invited to the annual spring luncheon as well as another event in the late summer or fall focused on fundraising. In addition to membership pledges, the Power of the Purse Fund raises funds by sponsoring an event annually like Steel Magnolias. These events are designed to be fun for members and participants in addition to raising funds. Great ideas on how we as a family can help our neighbors who are in need of housing!

When you are building something new-it’s best to talk with folks who are already doing the work. When we think about transitional housing, there is no one doing it better than and we are so grateful to the CEO, Melanie Conner, for sharing so much of her time and knowledge with us! We have added to our to do list and changed some of our initial ideas about how our programming will look. More importantly-we are excited about and grateful for this new relationship with and we look forward to where it will lead!

The Haralson Co. Community Christian Council has distributed 111,788 pounds of food to 8,510 Haralson County residents since mid-March, thanks to the generosity of the many donors to the Community Foundation of West Georgia COVID-19 Response Fund. While they report that the number of people seeking food has trended downward, they remain well above normal. The Christian Council is one of 22 nonprofit organization in Carroll, Haralson and Heard counties receiving grants from the fund, primarily for food and shelter needs. Donations to the COVID-19 Response Fund are sought and may be made at the home page of the Community Foundation’s website at cfwg.net, by text-to-give at "GIVEWESTGA" to 44321, or by check mailed to the Foundation at 807 South Park Street, Carrollton, Georgia 30117.

Council on Aging is one of the recipients of a grant from the Community Foundation of West Georgia’s COVID-19 Respnse Fund. Thank you to everyone who is donating! We are able to help so many in our community!

Carrollton Police Officer Phillip Ball delivers a meal for the Council on Aging, which is working to make sure the elderly have food by delivering meals and groceries. The Council on Aging is one of 23 nonprofits providing assistance with food, shelter and emergency needs in Carroll, Haralson and Heard counties that have received a total of $101,000 in grants from the Community Foundation of West Georgia COVID-19 Response Fund.

Receiving the latest grants were:
• West Georgia Council on Aging for food for the elderly;
• The Blake House for food for residents;
• Kids Peace for food, extra cleaning expenses and PPE;
• Heard County Community Partnership for emergency assistance;
• THS Emergency Shelter for emergency assistance.

Previous grants for food, emergency assistance and utilities have been made to Manna House, the Salvation Army, THS Emergency Shelter, Haralson County Community Christian Council, Heard County Food Pantry, Open Hands Christian Ministry, St. Margaret’s Community Outreach, West Georgia Council on Aging, Partners Advancing Student Success, Inc. (PASS), Bremen Food & Clothing Bank, Carroll County Emergency Shelter, Haralson County Community Christian Council, Hope Center, St. Vincent de Paul’s Society, West Georgia Technical College Project CARE, Whitesburg Area Christian Ministries, Rapha Clinic, Pregnancy Resource Center and Hearts of Cleburne County.
“Nonprofits are listening and helping a lot of people who are in some very tough situations, some for the first time in their lives. Each situation is met with compassion, empathy and a desire to help, day in and day out,” said Kim Jones, president of the Community Foundation.

HEARTS of Cleburne County recently received a grant from the Community Foundation of West Georgia COVID-19 Response Fund for financial assistance for cancer patients living in Carroll County. Some patients have received $25 gas cards so they can get to their cancer treatment appointments, while others have received assistance with food and medical supplies as well as other financial assistance. The HEARTS volunteers also said how much they appreciate the weekly conference calls the Foundation hosts with local nonprofits who share needs, solutions and news.
