In the Spring of 1922, a group of Carrollton businessmen decided to form a club. As a result, the club, now known as the Carrollton Lions Club was born. On May 4, 1922, the club was organized and the late Scott R. Timmons, a prominent local attorney, was elected the first president. Early on, the Carrollton Lions adopted the Lions International project of support for sight conservation and blind w
eek. Through the years and yet today, many hundreds of pairs of eye glasses have been provided for needy people. In time, Missouri Lions grew in numbers and strength to a point where they created a state program of Business Opportunities for the Blind. The Carrollton Lions Club continues to support this program today. One of the early projects of the Carrollton Lions Club was to assume sponsorship of a local Boy Scout Troop - a project which the Club has spearheaded through the years by providing leadership, guidance personnel and financial aid when needed. The club has and continues to also sponsor local youth to Missouri Boys State and Missouri Girls State, Scout Camps and Cheerleaders School; youth participating in state Lions football and basketball games; Carroll County Little League teams; Junior Olympics Track Meet in Carrollton, an annual event held for fifth and sixth grade school students, which the club originated; the annual Junior Livestock & Sheep Show, where the best of Carroll County livestock are shown; and scholarships to Carrollton High School seniors to further their education after graduation. The Club has used several fund-raising projects, including broom sales, Christmas tree sales, providing concessions for the annual Carrollton Band Day, picking test plot corn, sponsoring Santa Claus at Christmas time, funnel cake sales, and fish fries to fund these worthwhile projects. Now, after 100 years of service and fellowship, the Carrollton Lions are looking forward to many more years of community service and supporting our district, state and other programs of Lions Club International.
