💚 It's official! SUSTAIN.peopleplanetprosper is our first (hopefully out of many!) Bowdon Adopt-A-Road group with a beautiful sign to highlight their efforts in keeping the community clean, green, and beautiful!

🙌 Big thank you to Melissa Wilson with Bowdon Main Street and Clayton Kingsmill with Bowdon's Public Works for installing the sign; and to Sarah Maloy, Executive Director of SUSTAIN. (pictured with the big ✂️), and her support of litter cleanups!

🚧 What is Adopt-a-Road? The program allows organizations, businesses, schools, and civic groups to “adopt” a stretch of roadway and help keep it litter-free throughout the year.

🗓️ Time Commitment: 4 cleanups per year (about one per quarter), each cleanup typically takes 1–2 hours.
👥 Group Size: 4–8 volunteers work best for safety and efficiency.
🚦 Roadway Requirements: posted speed of 35 mph or less; the section should be about a mile long; parking for volunteers must be available nearby.
🦺 Keep Carroll Beautiful provides: safety vests; gloves; trash bags, grabbers, and bag holders; temporary “volunteers ahead” signs.

📣 Today's spotlight: MOTHS & BUTTERFLIES

🦋 Butterflies: Beautiful? Absolutely. Important pollinators? You bet! Taste with their feet? Also yes. 👣😂
🌙 Moths: the goths of the pollinator world. They come out at night, work by moonlight, and there are about 10 times more moth species than butterflies!

Butterflies and moths don't just make gardens prettier. As they sip nectar, they also help move pollen from flower to flower.

Good news: You don't have to identify every species. If it's a butterfly OR a moth visiting flowers, they count as one type of pollinators!

Every observation helps paint a better picture of pollinator health across the Southeast. Learn more about the census.

🌼 Great Southeast Pollinator Count looks at any insects that help plants reproduce by visiting flowers but 🐝 BEES & BUMBLEBEES 🐝 are divided into several categories for the count purposes:

🍯 Honey Bees – The OG pollinators. Small, fuzzy, and always on the clock. Responsible for the most delicious toast topping!
🐼 Bumblebees – Basically flying pandas. Fuzzy, chunky, and excellent pollinators.
🔨 Carpenter Bees – Great pollinators. Terrible roommates. They may drill into wood, but they also do important work in the garden! Easy to tell apart form bumblebees by their shiny hineys! 😄
🐝 Small Bees – any bee smaller than honey bee! Tiny in size, BIG on pollination. Easy to confuse with hoverflies - which have large reddish eyes. 👀

🐝🌼 Every pollinator counts... next Friday & Saturday!

The Great Southeast Pollinator Census counts ALL of flower visitors. Get ready to count & meet the pollinators you'll be looking for!

👉 🐝 Bees & Bumblebees
The pollinator superstars! Look for honey bees, carpenter bees (shiny hiney!), bumble bees (fuzzy rear!), and small native bees. Not sure how to tell them apart? Tune in later this week for a bee guide!

👉 🦋 Moths & Butterflies
Don't overthink it. If it's a butterfly or moth visiting flowers, count it!

👉 👀 Flies... Yup!
Big eyes, tiny antennae, and surprisingly important pollinators.

👉 ⚠️ Wasps! (Yes, Really!)
Easy to tell by a skinny waist and mean disposition. Many are excellent pollinators. Admire from a distance and count them, too!

👉 🐞 "What even is this?"
Beetles, dragonflies, lacewings, ladybugs (✨ the 2026 Pollinator of the Year! ✨),
and other flower-loving insects all count as "Other Insects."

Residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of difficult-to-recycle materials during a free two-in-one recycling event hosted by Keep Carroll Beautiful on Saturday, May 16. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Midway Church, located at 1 Midway Church Drive in Villa Rica.

The event will focus on collecting household hazardous waste items and providing secure paper shredding services for local households. Organizers said the event is designed to help residents properly dispose of items that are not easily recycled through traditional local programs.
