Hear from another one of our longtime supporters about their adoptive experience with BRAT – we would be nothing without our fosters and volunteers!
My partner and I had recently lost our beloved basset hound, Elwood. My mother-in-law told me about BRAT for “when were ready.” Ready came sooner than expected. While looking at the available pups on the BRAT site, I had a love-at-first-sight moment when I saw a beagle/basset named “Beans.” For a month or more, I would go check the site to see if Beans was still in foster or found his forever home. Finally, we decided to reach out to BRAT. We learned Beans had a broken front paw that hadn’t healed properly when he was out on the street in Palestine, Texas. He might require extensive surgery and rehab in the future. When we met Beans, he was charming and adorable and none of that mattered – we’d find the money for his care if we needed to. Dana was wonderful through the adoption process, so kind and helpful. Before he moved in, we learned from his foster mother that they had been calling him Wilbur, not Beans. We got the best of both, calling him Wilbur Beans. He was a faithful and loving companion to us for over 5 years. His broken paw never seemed to bother him. He tucked that paw under and jumped and ran with the best of them. He collected bow ties. Neighborhood children would follow us on walks. He snored. He was gentle and kind. He loved car trips and going for pup cups at the custard stand. I miss my little buddy dearly and always will.
A few months after he passed, we got a call from Dana about a young female beagle found in Lubbock who needed a foster. We took her in and fell in love with her. Sadie Mae is with us now, along with 2 of her unexpected puppies, but that, as they say, is another story!
