Two more cats in for TNR from the Carroll industrial site:

We trapped these two last week and took them in for their appointments on Monday. The little brown tabby boy was estimated to be only 9 weeks old, making him the youngest cat we’ve TNR’d so far. Even though he’s young, he’s already weighing in at 2.5lbs and is very spicy.

The second cat was a female. Fortunately, she was not pregnant and showed no signs of having recently given birth which was a relief.

With these two now spayed and neutered, we’re one step closer to getting this colony stabilized. We’ll continue keeping an eye on the area as we work to wrap up this project.

Lorenzo and Jasmine are playful, curious, affectionate, and always ready to investigate whatever is happening around them.

They will be looking for their forever homes once they’re old enough for their vaccines and spay/neuter surgeries in a few weeks. In the meantime, they remain in a loving foster home.

Another TNR from the industrial site in Carroll, Ohio. This young female was found to be lactating, indicating she had recently given birth. Her spay surgery was routine and she recovered well. We are going to continue to keep a close eye on the area for kittens.

Not long ago, we shared that City Cats of Columbus has paused intake while we focus on TNR efforts and work within our current foster capacity. Rescue, however, doesn’t always go according to plan 🫩

Recently, we were contacted by one of our volunteers after their coworker came across a mom cat and kittens outside. Wanting to help, her coworker picked up two of the kittens and later brought them to our volunteer. By the time the full story was shared, there was no clear reunification plan in place and mom cat along with her other two babies could no longer be located.

Because we were not there ourselves, we don’t know all of the details or exactly what happened but situations like this are an important reminder: If you find kittens outside, always make sure you have a plan in place before intervening and whenever possible, follow mom.

Mother cats often leave briefly to search for food or may be actively relocating their kittens to another location. Separating kittens too early can unintentionally make an already difficult situation even harder 💔 These babies are estimated to be around 5 weeks old and are now safely in a foster home receiving food, warmth, and support. Thankfully, these little ones appear healthy and we are hopeful that after they receive their veterinary care and are old enough, they will be available for adoption ❤️

🐱 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR COMFEST 🐾

City Cats of Columbus will be at ComFest June 26th, 27th, & 28th and we are in need of volunteers to help us!

We’re looking for volunteers to help staff our booth during the festival by sharing information about TNR, community cats, booth setup and cleanup, helping to sell merchandise and fundraising items, and spread awareness about our mission.

Not interested in working directly at our booth? That’s okay! Signing up to work volunteer hours for ComFest is another meaningful way to support our mission. ComFest requires participating booths to fulfill volunteer hour requirements so this is another great way to help us continue putting our resources toward helping cats in our community.

Another round of TNR kitties for this week:

We trapped these cats in what I’d describe as an industrial area off the highway in Carroll, just south of Canal Wi******er. This isn’t an area I usually trap in but when I was told there were 10–12 cats, including potentially pregnant ones, I couldn’t turn a blind eye to them.

When we arrived, we immediately discovered two female cats with young litters. One mom had a single kitten who appeared to be around 5 weeks old, while the other had 2 tiny kittens estimated to be about 2 weeks old. We decided to try and trap the mother with the older kitten first but she was much smarter than us. Even after baiting the trap with her kitten, she had absolutely no interest in going into it and quickly figured out what we were trying to do and kept her distance. At this point, she’ll need to be trap trained, which is something we’ve already started working on. We also made the decision not to trap the other mother yet since her kittens are still extremely young. The plan is to return in the next few weeks once the babies are a bit older and stronger so we can safely get mom spayed as well. Both moms have a caregiver feeding and looking out for them so they will stay safe until we can return.

This leads us to the cats we were able to trap:

~The black and brown tabby ended up being female and pregnant. Thankfully, she was able to receive a spay in time, preventing yet another litter from being born outside.

~The younger kitty pictured here, a beautiful white and diluted calico/tabby mix, was estimated to be around 6 months old. Fortunately, she was not pregnant and was able to receive a routine spay.

~And lastly, the big fluffy white guy received a routine neuter as well!

Over the past few months our work has shifted quite a bit, which I’m sure some of you have noticed. More recently, our main focus has been TNR, community cat care, and identifying/stabilizing feral and stray cat colonies, especially now that it’s kitten season. A huge portion of our time and resources are going toward trapping, transporting cats to appointments, recovery, and feeding colonies. Our reach is broader than ever before and we are now helping cats in areas that we previously were not able to provide TNR support in, which feels incredibly rewarding to see. With that said, we unfortunately have made the difficult decision to pause our intake and foster program.

While intake is paused, our TNR and community cat work is absolutely continuing. We are still actively trapping, spaying/neutering, feeding and monitoring colonies.

While this shift has been difficult, it’s what is most sustainable for us right now and where the need has been greatest. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us through donations, sharing posts, supplies, and encouragement. Your support is what allows us to continue.
