Dimmit County 4-H Members Bernice Romero, Katalina Miranda, Ryan Cervantez & Austin Keen attended the 2026 District 12 Leadership Lab!
They had the opportunity to develop leadership skills, build new friendships, participate in team-building activities, and learn valuable lessons they can bring back to our club and community.
Throughout the camp, youth pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones, took on new challenges, and developed valuable leadership skills while making lasting memories. We are so proud of all who attended and represented our county so well! 💚

A special thank you to our 4-H Parent Leaders Association for making this experience possible through their support of the Leadership Lab Grant! 🍀

Worried about a quarantine? New World screwworm movement restriction zones work much different than other infectious disease quarantines.

✅Animals can still move! Animals are able to move into and out of the zone as soon as they meet TAHC requirements.

✅Checkpoints are quick and simple! Trailers moving through an infested zone must stop at TAHC checkpoints. If animals are coming from outside of an infested zone and intend to keep moving through the zone to an address outside of the zone, they will receive educational outreach and be allowed to keep moving.

✅TAHC will work with you to avoid interrupting continuity of business! Call the TAHC as soon as you know you want to move animals out of an infested zone. We will schedule an inspection and advise you on how to meet requirements to keep your animals moving safely.

🔎When it comes to New World screwworm (NWS) prevention, vigilance is key. The chances of finding a NWS fly are low, so producers and animal owners are encouraged to remain watchful and report suspicious maggots on their animals.

USDA and TAHC continue to work together to conduct fly surveillance by utilizing NWS fly traps. To learn more about the role livestock producers play in animal surveillance, visit https://bit.ly/FAQ-NWSSurveillance

On June 3, 2026, the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) received confirmation of a detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in Zavala County, Texas. The best thing that livestock producers and animal owners can do to prevent infestation is to put eyes on their animals as often as possible, remain vigilant by implementing enhanced management practices to avoid creating wounds, and promptly report suspicious wounds.
