“My personal experience with Caramore was amazing. My life had taken a bad turn and my Peer Support Specialist helped me pick up the pieces mentally and bravely face the addictions I am recovering from. Now, I thank my peer support for showing me the resources for a new and better life. I recently earned my Peer Support Specialist certificate and am employed as a Peer Support Specialist myself. I feel gratified to be able to help people with similar experiences.”

Nicole’s experience reminds us of the impact we make when we help someone rebuild their life.

Every donation makes stories like this possible. Thank you.

Halloween is here — and for many parents and caregivers, it’s the spookiest day of the year (and not because of ghosts!).

Combine:

🧃 12 parts sugar
⚡ 4 parts overexcitement
😅 2 parts “I AM calm!”

Mix it all together, and you’ve got one powerful Halloween brew. The good news? The spell breaks at midnight, and the family memories last forever.

Wishing all caregivers a magical, sugar-filled day … and maybe a secret candy stash just for you.

Happy Halloween from our team!

💬 A heartfelt review from one of the parents at Caramore Community Inc. 🌟 "Graduation on October 1st was a major milestone for Lazeah, one that speaks volumes about what support and perseverance can achieve. Without Caramore's chance and dedication, reaching this point would have been so much harder. This journey has not always been easy, but the impact of your patience and commitment is clear in every success Lazeah achieves. Thank you for believing in him and for all you do!" Together, we're building brighter futures. 🌈

Caramore is Hiring!
Position: Admissions Coordinator
Join our team and make a difference!

Job description:

2025/10/15 Admissions Coordinator Job Posting

Caramore is a nonprofit that has been operating in Carrboro and Chapel Hill for over 50 years. We are structured support program that supports adults with mental illness to establish stable employment and independence. We’re provide supportive, stimulating, and normalized real-world settings where individuals can master the skills to live the life they choose. We promote wellness, self-efficacy, and development of the skills needed to live and work in the community.

Caramore coordinates mental health treatment with local clinical providers and offers a transitional work and housing program where individuals attain successful employment, suitable housing, financial stability, and achieve independent living. Mental illness can entail cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal impairments that can hinder the ability to live the life one chooses. Our rehabilitative setting, including socialization and employment, works to amend those impairments and behaviors through concentration on daily living skills, medication management, food and nutrition, health and hygiene, and social interaction. Our 9-month program strives to support the individual to meet their own particular needs.

Work is an important component of our identity, and so it is with Caramore clients. Caramore clients begin training for a real job on the very first day that they enter the program. Incremental progress through the program develops disciplined and hardworking employees who feel good about themselves, are defined less by their illness and more by their vocation, and are imbued with confidence to pursue their goals.

Many Caramore participants also find Peer Support Services to be a valuable support in achieving varied goals and practicing self-advocacy. Provided by mentors with lived experience in recovery from mental illness or addiction, Peer Support offers several hours per week of direct, individual assistance with practical goals.

Caramore hopes that working to reduce misunderstanding and stigma attached to mental illness will improve the recovery process. Environment matters. Nobody wants to be sick, but people can get better and do get better. Caramore can be part of this process of recovery. Recovery includes making decisions to pursue goals that support wellness and stability and taking measurable action towards those goals. Inside the supportive structure of Caramore, risks can be taken; smaller mistakes and miscues absorbed, larger mistakes avoided, and a new life can start. Caramore is hope, action, and progress.

Caramore Community

Caramore began in 1974, as a result of one mother's unlikely vision, unrelenting advocacy, and unparalleled dedication to her own son who was facing the every day challenges of living with mental illness in a time and a community that wasn't equipped to provide him or people like him with the resources and support they needed and deserved.

While operating under our previous name, NCAET, Inc. and under her leadership, we were able to open the first group home serving people with mental illness in Chapel Hill (Ephesus Group Home) in 1976.

After that, Caroline M. Livermore, our founder and namesake, went on to champion this work for the rest of her life. In 1990, Caramore received national accreditation (which is renewed every three years) and in 1995 we moved to our current address, making this facility our new headquarters.

Today we are able to help launch the independent lives of over 100 people each year, by providing housing, employment, supervision, and support to motivated individuals who simply need a gentle nudge in the right direction!
