the 21st century workforce. What happens at E3 Camp?:

​​Students will be exposed to the work (current and historical) of black scientists, inventors, and artists through hands-on experiences of electricity, solar power, coding, forensics, poetry/spoken word, engineering design, math, music, aerodynamics, and videography that engage curiosity, observa

tion and imagination. We explore science/technology on a local level through the variety of ways they’re used by community workers.

E3 Camp congratulates the 15 students that completed the Stormwater/Rain Garden Project. Students completed 10 hours of classwork and built a rain garden at the Cedar Rock Apartments in Carrboro.

Students received a certificate, t-shirt and a stipend of $220. E3 Camp collaborated with Urban Sustainability Solutions Inc. and the Town of Hillsborough and Environment Services of Raleigh staff members also supported this project. It was a great way to increase STEM skills and help our community.

On August 19th, E3 Camp collaborated with Urban Sustainability Solutions and 15 students/interns to build a Rain Garden and plant seeds at Cedar Rock Apartments at 207 Lindsay Street in the Town of Carrboro, NC .

The Town of Hillsborough and Environment Services from Raleigh staff members were also in attendance. It was hard work on a hot summer day but it will pay off for years to come.

On Day 1, we learned about the principles of urban rain garden construction. Today, we meet at the Town of Carrboro, NC Carrboro Civic Club for hands on training in the skills we need to plan and build a rain garden.

E3 has joined with Urban Sustainability Solutions to provide a paid apprenticeship program in green urban storm water management.

Yesterday, 16 middle and high school students met at the Chapel Hill Public Library for a day of class room instruction on the basics of green storm water management.

Friday was Day 15, our last day of camp for 2026. The morning began with an inspirational talk with Craig Williams a scholar/athlete that has just graduated from Hampton and is on his way to Boston University for an M.S. In Psychology.

Then we celebrated nine years of E3 Camp with friends, family and sponsors. The entire camp lined up to present the key takeaways from the on-site presenters and field trips. We thanked the many sponsors and volunteers who made the camp possible. We celebrated Ms. Anissa McLendon who is the life force that makes the camp possible. Her mother, Mae McLendon, was a civil rights leader and community activist. She was a strong supporter of E3 and was very missed this year.

A Camp Donor has created a college scholarship in her honor designed for an E3 camper who has graduated from high school and participated in E3 for a least 4 years. The first scholarship was awarded to Jonathan Okello.

During the morning of Day 14 we learned about how the Crime Scene Investigation unit assists the Chapel Hill Police Department. She brought along the department’s therapy dog Frankie (named after Franklin Street).

She is enrolled in a mortuary science program and shared with us the licensing steps to become a mortician. The rest of the day we practiced our presentations for our end of the year show for our families and friends.

On Day 6 of E3 Camp recognized the poets amongst us. Two of our campers participated in a poetry reading sponsored by G.L.O.W. Girls, a non-profit organized to provide a safe place for artistic Black girls to express them selves in a safe and fun environment. G.L.O.W was founded by former E3 camper Vianna Fornville.

Day 13 was jam packed. In the African American moment, we learned about Walter Fenner “Buck” Lenard one of the top baseball players of all time. He played first base in the American Negro and Mexican League. Then, Hyun Pal and Shakira Bonique of Yoga for Youth introduced us to yoga breath and body work to energize and focus. They then lead a yoga class for the campers and staff.

In the afternoon, the Orange County Sheriff's Office - North Carolina explained how they use drones to find missing persons and locate suspects. We saw a drone in action over Town of Chapel Hill. In the final session, the students of the The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Circle Lab and Cohan Lab explained the difference between psychology and neurology. We build brain map caps and learned about African American leaders in psychology and neurology: Francis Sumner, Robert Lee Williams, Charles Henry Turner, Margaret Beale Spencer and Angelina Dukes.
