TENTH ANNIVERSARY ❤️ FRANKLIN TRAIL CELEBRATION

Please join us at the Carpinteria City Council meeting to hear the announcement of a CITY RESOLUTION to kick off the 10-year anniversary of re-opening the historic Franklin Trail.

WHEN: Monday, May 22, at 5:30 pm
WHERE: City Council Chambers, 5775 Carpinteria Avenue.

The Franklin Trail will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in the year 2023. The trail was planned, funded, and built by collaborating with many organizations and individuals to create something beautiful in Carpinteria.

Local organizations, including Santa Barbara County Trails Council, the Montecito Trails Foundation, and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, partnered with government agencies that included the City of Carpinteria, the County of Santa Barbara, and the U.S. Forest Service to reclaim the eight-mile long Franklin Trail -- extending from the City of Carpinteria to the crest of the Santa Ynez Mountains in the Los Padres National Forest.

Since the trail opening, it has brought together the community with a diverse group of community members, including hikers, runners, bicyclists, equestrians, birders, and other trail enthusiasts.

Santa Barbara County Trails Council will help coordinate several community activities for the 10th-anniversary celebration. There will be a community hike, a workday including trail maintenance training, a trail run, and a celebration that will include an art show. Our first event will be a community workshop to set goals and objectives for the future of Franklin Trail.

All are welcome to join in and help make this a year of celebration and renewal. Please email to [email protected] if you want to participate in all or any element of the 10-year anniversary events.

TRAILS NEED TIME TO RECOVER

While we certainly understand the urge to be outside and run, hike or bike after a week of rain, you have probably heard, “If it sticks to your heels or wheels, it’s time to turn around.” This is particularly true for many trails in Santa Barbara County with sticky clay treads. Some trails dry quickly, but most take 4 to 5 days after a measurable rain event.

We will need help repairing trails. Sign up to volunteer.

National TAKE-A-HIKE Day (today)

Certainly, it is not too much to ask to reflect on the value of trails on a day tagged for trail appreciation and enjoyment.

It is also a good day to ask what are we, as a community, doing to promote public engagement in land stewardship and trail use for all types of outdoor recreation.
