If you were to experience a medical emergency, would your loved ones know your wishes for your healthcare? Completing an Advance Directive means making a plan so your friends and family don’t have to; by making your healthcare decisions about CPR, life-sustaining treatments, and organ donation ahead of time, you can avoid placing a burden on your loved ones to decide for you should you be unable to speak for yourself. To ensure your wishes are followed, be certain that the person you appoint to be your health care agent understands your wishes and will abide by them. Your healthcare agent has the legal right to make decisions for you even if close family members disagree. If you foresee that your health care agent may encounter resistance from your family members, the following steps can help:

Communicate early with family members you anticipate may object to your decisions.

Tell them in writing whom you have appointed to be your health care agent and explain why you have done so.

Let them know that you do not wish them to be involved with decisions about your medical care and give a copy of these communications to your health care agent as well.
