Tragic Drowning Incident at Sturgeon Bay Beach

Bliss Township, Michigan - August 3, 2025 - The Emmet County Sheriff's Office is deeply saddened to report the drowning of a 14-year-old male from Alanson, Michigan. The tragic incident occurred at Sturgeon Bay Beach in Bliss Township, Michigan, on Sunday, at approximately 5:41PM.

Authorities were dispatched to Sturgeon Bay Beach following a distress call reporting two teenage male subjects struggling to stay afloat in the water. An unknown male bystander courageously rescued one of the teenagers. Unfortunately, the second teen, a 14-year-old male, went underwater and did not resurface.

The Emmet County Dive Team responded promptly to the scene. After an exhaustive search effort, they recovered the body of the young male in the area he was last seen swimming.

At this time the Emmet County Sheriff's Office will not be releasing the name of the deceased. We believe it is important to respect the family's privacy as they grieve the loss of their loved one. Sheriff Matt Leirstein issued a heartfelt statement: "Our hearts are broken for the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time."

Sheriff Leirstein further emphasized the hazards presented by Lake Michigan, stating, "Our Dive team rescuers advised me there was a very strong northeast current that pulled them in that direction as they entered the water to begin their search efforts. This is just a reminder northern Lake Michigan and its currents are very dangerous. We urge everyone to exercise extreme caution when entering the water."

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the following agencies: United States Coast Guard, Emmet County EMS, Emmet County Search and Rescue, Pellston Fire Department, Carp Lake Fire Department, Readmond-Friendship Fire Department, and the Emmet County Medical Examiners Office.
