Like so many displaced families around the world, Viktoriia, Vasylyna and Tanya’s journeys to the U.S. were difficult. “I never wanted to live in another country,” Vasylyna shared. “In Ukraine, we had everything. We had a good life.”

Before the war, the three friends didn’t know each other. They lived in different towns and had thriving professional and personal lives. Tanya and Vasylyna had worked in the medical field and Viktoriia was an accomplished interior designer and ran her own business with her husband. They never imagined war would come to their doorsteps.

Sadly in February of 2022, war did come, and they each made the heartbreaking decision to flee. But thanks to volunteers named Jackie and Royce, they didn’t have to walk alone for long when they arrived in the U.S.

Everyday refugee families in Chicagoland are pursuing their dreams with grit, creativity and hope. But due to privacy needs in a tough immigration enforcement environment, we often can’t share them with you here on social media.

Join us in person to hear just a few of these stories within the context of broader recent policy impacts on refugees.

These stories don’t make the headlines, and unfortunately many of them won’t be showing up in your feed either. But they are so important to hear!

Everyday refugee families in Chicagoland are pursuing their dreams with grit, creativity and hope.

They are earning degrees, studying for vocational certifications, learning language, drafting business plans, winning scholarships, graduating high school, blessing volunteers with their friendship and hospitality, and fighting for the best future for their kids.

BUT... we can’t introduce you to them on social media. We can't show you their smiles or the sounds of their voices or the stories behind their names.

Why? Because so many refugee and other immigrant families have high privacy needs due to a less welcoming policy environment.

That’s why we’re excited for a chance to share some stories in person on June 11th in Lombard as we focus on refugees and recognize World Refugee Day.

Join us in person to hear just a few of these stories within the context of broader recent policy impacts on refugees.

Let us know if you have a decent floor lamp! We know families who could use a hand with basic household items.

As our Executive Director Susan Sperry prepares to move into a new season with World Relief, she reflects on a moment when she witnessed the Chicagoland community believe in more for their refugee neighbors.

Were you there too at this event back in 2017? Drop a memory in the comments.

(You can also join our Believe in More campaign and double your giving impact through the end of June! Learn more and donate in comments).

The refugee families we walk with day to day inspire and challenge us. Like millions of others around the world who’ve fled their homes and left so much behind, they adapt, hope, pursue lives of thriving, and continue to believe in more for themselves and those they love.

During May and June, you can help create more than survival for your refugee neighbors. Every gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $80,000 thanks to generous donors.
