Knowing how to help can make all the difference. When supporting an older or vulnerable adult, remember to provide a safe space to listen, respect their choices, and connect with local professional resources when needed. Check out these crucial steps shared by the Human Development Commission. 👇
💜 What to Do if You Suspect Elder Abuse 💜
You don't have to be certain that abuse is occurring to take supportive action. If you are concerned about an older adult or vulnerable adult, consider these steps:
**1. Listen without judgment.**
Provide a safe space for the person to share their experiences. Believe them, listen, and avoid criticism or blame.
**2. Avoid making promises you can't keep.**
Rather than promising secrecy or specific outcomes, be honest about your role and the support options that may be available.
**3. Reach out for support and reporting options.**
Connect with advocates, Adult Protective Services, law enforcement, or other professionals who can help assess concerns and provide guidance.
**4. Document concerns.**
If appropriate, keep notes of what you observed, heard, or witnessed, including dates and details. Documentation can be helpful if intervention becomes necessary.
**5. Don't make assumptions.**
What feels like an obvious next step to you may not feel safe or comfortable to the older adult. They may have concerns about relationships, housing, finances, caregiving, or other consequences. Whenever possible, respect their autonomy and involve them in decisions about next steps.
Support starts with paying attention, listening, and being willing to help.
