Human Development Commission Community Action Agency HDC: Restoring Hope by Helping People and Changing Lives.

HDC is one of approximately 1,000 Community Action Agencies (CAAs) serving the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. CAAs were the centerpiece of President Lyndon Johnson's "War on Poverty" and founded as non-profit organizations that fight poverty at the local level. CAAs cover all cities and counties in the country and are a primary source of support for low-income individuals and seniors who wish to become self-sufficient and/or live independently.

For some older adults, a knock at the door means far more than lunch. It means a friendly face, a safety check and the support they need to remain independent at home. 💛

🚨HDC urgently needs regular and substitute volunteer drivers in Tuscola and Sanilac counties. Just a few hours of your time can make a meaningful difference in someone’s day—and their ability to continue living at home.

Mileage reimbursement is available. Call (800) 843-6394 to volunteer.

🎒 One week later, and we’re finally getting a chance to take it all in. ❤️

Last Tuesday, we wrapped up our final 2026 HDC Back-to-School Bash in Lapeer — and after a whirlwind of collecting, sorting, stuffing, hauling and distributing backpacks, we’re finally catching up on sharing some of the moments that made it all worthwhile.

Lapeer showed up! We distributed 307 backpacks to students that afternoon, bringing our Back-to-School Bash totals to:

🎒 260 — Bad Axe
🎒 270 — Sandusky
🎒 307 — Lapeer

That’s 837 backpacks at our three community events, plus another 176 provided to HDC clients and local families — 1,013 backpacks distributed altogether! ❤️

We were also honored to welcome U.S. Representative Lisa McClain, Michigan Community Action Executive Director Brian McCann, and OLHSA Executive Director Dr. Susan Harding to our Lapeer event. We appreciate them taking the time to join us and see Community Action — and community partnership — at work.

But 1,013 backpacks doesn’t happen because of one organization. It happens because an entire community decides to show up for its kids.

And that is the part we still have so much more to share.

The weeks leading up to these events were BUSY, and while our attention was focused on getting backpacks stuffed and supplies into the hands of students, we haven’t yet had the opportunity to recognize all of the businesses, organizations, churches, donors, volunteers, partners and individuals who helped make it happen.

So even though our events ended a week ago, our thank-yous are just getting started. ❤️

Over the coming days, we’ll be highlighting more of the incredible people and organizations behind these 1,013 backpacks — because every donation, collection, volunteer hour, shared post, partnership and helping hand deserves to be recognized.

For now, enjoy a few more moments from Lapeer and know that behind every one of these photos is exactly why we do this: kids excited for a new school year, families supported, and a community showing them that we’ve got their back. 🎒❤️

Thank you, Lapeer. And thank you to EVERYONE who helped make our 2026 Back-to-School Bashes possible. ❤️
