Everyone deserves access to healthy food. You can help. Why does increasing access to healthy food matter?
Sno-Valley Harvest was founded at Hopelink in 2011 in partnership with Rotary First Harvest and AmeriCorps*VISTA. The partnership provided three years of funding to support AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers who collaborated with Hopelink staff and community partners to found and grow the program. Over 109,000 pounds of produce was collected and distributed at Hopelink and other local food banks over the
first three years of the program. With the end of AmeriCorps*VISTA funding for Sno-Valley Harvest in 2014, Hopelink is proud to take on full ownership of the program in 2015 and looks forward to expanding the program’s operations and impact in coming years under the new name Hopelink Harvest. The United States Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.”
In Washington, 14.6 percent of households experienced food insecurity, with 6.1 percent of households falling within the “very low food security” category. Food insecurity is associated with poor dietary intake among seniors and younger adults, and has a variety of negative impacts, particularly related to health and the ability for children to learn in school. By providing a consistent and direct source of fresh and locally grown produce, the Hopelink Harvest program is a critical component of ensuring that all members of our community have access to healthy food. Our volunteers have fun and learn about food and farming while serving their community. Throughout the growing season, gleaning events are scheduled to harvest produce donated by area farms. Community and business groups, as well as individual volunteers, are welcome to get involved.

Maddie Price from Harvest Against Hunger and I had the chance today to go to the Farm Bill Listening Session hosted by local congresswoman Dr. Kim Schrier at Remlinger Farms with Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett, both from the House Committee on Agriculture. It was so inspiring to hear from so many farmers, ranchers, dairies, and hunger relief organizations this morning. We then had the chance to join the Congresswomen on a farm tour Local Roots Farm and get to express how much the farm purchasing grants we receive to buy local produce for our markets mean to our clients and our farmers and how amazing it is that we can support local farmers financially, while also getting the best quality produce available in our agriculturally rich Valley for people in need. A truly inspiring day!

We are so thankful for our amazing garden volunteers and all their hard work growing and harvesting fresh produce for our Hopelink Markets. Elizabeth here harvested some kale, lovage, sage, mint and green onions from the Redmond Garden on the first true day of summer and we are so excited to have her and our other volunteers’ enthusiasm and dedication to the garden.
