We’re always giddy and grateful when these native parasitic wasps start zipping around the nursery (faster than our cameras can keep up). We’re not entirely sure which species they are, but for a few years now, they’ve been overwintering in our bulb trays and emerging each spring around the same time fuzzy cottonwood seeds drift through the air like a strange summer snow.

The beneficial wasps are most active on warm days and move quickly from leaf to leaf, helping keep pesky aphids in check and playing an important role in balancing our nursery’s ecosystem. In fact, they’re one of the reasons we haven’t needed insecticides in more than a year.

Their seasonal return continues to make us pause, smile, and think, “Nature is SO. DANG. COOL!”

Everyone loves sweet corn… so this year, we’ve decided to try growing a whole lot of it 🌽

Our crew transplanted the first succession of “Who Gets Kissed?” sweet corn using a paper pot transplanter, another experiment for the agriculture team (since corn is typically direct seeded). With four staggered plantings planned, we’re hoping to keep fresh organic corn headed to local food security partners from July through September!

Now we just have to keep the critters from getting to it first 🦌

While harvesting the last of the Kids’ Farm turnips before the beds were prepped for summer crops, environmental educator Jacob spotted a tiny bunny peeping through the greens. He and Farmer Lynnea found two more and carefully relocated all three to a flower bed close by. Thankfully, they also snagged these squee-worthy photos, earning true hero status 🤩🤗
