With a significant winter storm set to impact our region beginning tomorrow, I’ve been in close contact with our Bureau of Emergency Services, Department of Public Works, Sheriff’s Office, and our local highway superintendents to ensure Putnam County is fully prepared.

The latest forecast calls for 12–18 inches of snow area-wide, with strong winds that could create dangerous travel conditions and near-whiteout visibility at times. Following a 7:00 PM briefing with our county emergency personnel I will be having this evening, I intend to declare a State of Emergency for Putnam County to help us manage this storm proactively and keep our residents safe.

Our DPW crews are ready, our first responders are prepared, and our emergency management team is coordinating closely with our municipal partners and New York State.

I am asking all residents to take this storm seriously:

• Avoid travel once the snow begins
• Prepare your homes and vehicles tonight
• Check on elderly neighbors and those who may need assistance

I also want to thank the men and women who will be working around the clock — plow operators, law enforcement, EMS, firefighters, dispatchers, and highway departments — who leave their families to make sure the rest of us stay safe.

We will continue to provide updates as conditions change.

Please stay safe, stay warm, and stay off the roads when the snow begins.

*** URGENT WEATHER UPDATE ***

A Blizzard Warning has been issued for Putnam and Orange Counties effective today at 1:00 p.m. until Monday, February 23 at 6:00 p.m. Which means you could expect strong winds accompanied by falling and/or blowing snow, resulting in reduced visibility for three or more hours.

Snowfall will begin in Orange and Putnam Counties on today, February 22 at 1:00 p.m., but the strongest winds and blizzard conditions are expected Sunday night into Monday. Between 14 - 22 inches of snow is expected with snowfall rates up to 2 inches per hour at times. Visibility will be low and travel will become dangerous. Temperatures will feel as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind gusts of up to 45 mph are expected. Strong winds and the weight of snow may bring down trees and power lines.

Avoid travel if possible. Expect delays and closures. If you can't avoid traveling: clean off your vehicle before driving, drive slow and don't use cruise control, leave extra distance between vehicles, and don't crowd the plows. Roads can be slick even if they just look wet.
Practice safe shoveling dress warmly, stay hydrated, move only small amounts of snow, and take frequent breaks.
If you are stranded in a vehicle, avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by running the motor for 10 minutes every hour. While your car is running, open the windows slightly for fresh air. Keep your exhaust pipe clear of snow.

Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne has declared a State of Emergency for Putnam County effective Sunday, February 22, following a briefing with County emergency response leadership, as a powerful winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall and hazardous conditions to the region.

County Executive Byrne stated: “Public safety is our top priority. This storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall and dangerous travel conditions. Declaring a State of Emergency allows us to position our resources, support our local municipalities, and respond quickly to any issues that arise. I strongly urge residents to avoid travel, prepare their homes, and check on neighbors who may need assistance.”

The latest forecasts call for 12 to 18 inches of snow across Putnam County, along with strong winds that may create blowing and drifting snow and periods of near-whiteout visibility, making travel extremely dangerous.

As part of the County’s storm response:

All non-essential Putnam County offices will be closed on Monday, February 23.
Essential emergency and public safety personnel will remain on duty throughout the storm.

A Code Blue is in effect to ensure vulnerable residents have access to warm shelter. Code Blue protocols ensure that no individual in need of shelter is left out in the cold. Anyone aware of a person in need of shelter is urged to contact local law enforcement or the Department of Social Services for assistance.

The County’s Bureau of Emergency Services, Department of Public Works, Sheriff’s Office, and local highway departments have been coordinating in advance of the storm. Road crews are prepared to operate around the clock to keep main roadways passable, and emergency services will continue without interruption. Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads during snowfall.

Frostbite can set in within 30 MINUTES when wind chill drops below 0°F, and just 10 MINUTES at -20°F. Numbness means damage is already occurring.

Most frostbite affects those who "just ran out for a minute." Keep an eye on your fingers, toes, ears, nose, and cheeks. Know the signs BEFORE you need them! ❄️🥶

A State of Emergency is now in effect for Putnam County.

It's REALLY cold out. Please, just stay inside today.

It’s not worth trying to drive somewhere else. Please stay off the roads, let local road crews clear the snow.

Stay inside, stay off the roads, stay safe.
