Carmel Symphony Maestro David Commanday Shared Insight into Art of Music!

At the Oct 9th club meeting, Carmel Rotarians were enlightened with a mini-course on the art of music by David Commanday, Music Director and Conductor of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO). Commanday shared a brief overview of his background as a cm laude Harvard University graduate and cellist performing under Leonard Bernstein, then transitioning to conducting and rubbing batons with the likes of Rudolf Nureyev, Yo-Yo Ma, Bobby McFerrin, Joshua Bell, and Itzhak Perlman. He then delightfully engaged club members with an interactive, entertaining, and educational presentation about the similarities between visual art and audible art – music! He likened how paintings and music both have a medium, canvas and frame, and how the eye sees and the brain perceives.

After his presentation, Rotarian Tammy Haney presented Commanday with children’s books to autograph, ‘Music and How it Works”, that the club will donate to Carmel elementary school libraries. Carmel Symphony Maestro David Commanday Shared Insight into Art of Music!

Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

The event, organized by the Carmel City Council and Rotary Club of Carmel, included live music, dancing, games, exhibits and free ice cream.

Did Rotary run the Carmel International Arts Festival? 🎨

No—but you could certainly find Rotarians all over it!

From artists and volunteers to behind-the-scenes support, Rotary was well represented throughout the festival:

🎨 Randy Sorrell was there as an exhibiting artist with his booth, Randy Sorrell Art.

🍴 Chaya Reich, founder of the Carmel Culinary Booster Club, was lending a hand at the Carmel High School Culinary Arts booth.

🇮🇹 Julie Standish was at the Carmel Cortona Sister Cities booth, celebrating Carmel’s connection with Cortona, Italy.

🌎 Mara, our Rotary Youth Exchange Exchange student from Spain, pitched in and volunteered at the CHS booth.

💪 Gary Sexton provided logistical support and helped keep things moving behind the scenes.

And then there were the two Rotarians who really were running the whole thing— Meg Gates Osborne and Brad Osborne with MEG & Associates, who put in an incredible amount of work to make the Carmel International Arts Festival happen.

So, did Rotary run the festival?

No. But Rotarians were definitely all over it! ❤️

That’s one of the things I love about Rotary—our members show up, pitch in, share their talents and support our community in so many different ways.

9-11-2001 – Peter Beering Provided Somber Reflection on 25th Anniversary of Deadliest Attack on US

Friday September 11, 2026, a packed meeting with many guests listened intently as Peter Beering, an internationally recognized expert in emergency preparedness and counter terrorism and one of a handful of experts who foretold the attacks, presented a retrospective look at the 9-11-2001 attacks that changed the world.

On the 25th anniversary of the worst attack on the United States, Beering reminded us why we must never forget. He went through the headline happenings in the summer prior to September 2001 and the timeline after the attacks - the worst ever launched on American soil at the hands of a ruthless enemy we scarcely knew. Prior to 9-11-2001, he foretold that a spectacular attack by an obscure terrorist named Osama Bin Laden using airplanes would target our tallest buildings and Washington DC. During that time, Beering served as the Indianapolis terrorism preparedness coordinator. On 9-10-2001, Beering was presenting to a national medical conference, training them on the dangers of germ warfare. He’s been involved in antiterrorism efforts for over 30 years and has trained senior officials throughout the US in terrorism preparation and response on behalf of the Department of Defense.

Beering described our country’s response, what’s been spent on systems and technology, and the omnipresent problem of trying to outsmart an enemy that changes tactics with each improvement implemented by the good guys. In concluding his powerful presentation, he summarized that the world is not a safe place and we must all act today to be better informed, better equipped, and better prepared. Afterwards, Tammy Haney presented Beering with books to autograph, “Towers Falling”, that will be presented to Carmel school libraries.

May we never forget 9-11-2001!
