What an incredible opportunity... I wish I had found this path many years ago. This is a great way to start a long career in California.

➑️ As Phase 2 of the Rancho Cañada Floodplain Restoration gets underway, it's worth looking back at what Phase 1 accomplished. Crews moved 266,650 cubic yards of material (the equivalent of filling over 80 Olympic swimming pools), installed more than 81,000 native plants, and reconnected the Carmel River to floodplain areas that had been isolated for decades.

🌿 The results are already showing up in the landscape. Side channels have activated, groundwater has returned to the surface, and wildlife is moving through the corridor. Phase 2 builds on that foundation, expanding restoration into the eastern section of the site.

So grateful to those that created this event, made it an annual happening (always on the spring equinox) and have kept it going over the years.
There are so many ways to enjoy and experience our local wild places. There are so many people eager to guide you and teach you along the way. From the many parks to the smallest of wildlife-related non-profits, none of this would be possible without dedicated staff and knowledgeable volunteers.
Big thanks to all of them for making this possible. πŸ™πŸ’šπŸ“·

Yesterday's event was well attended and went very smoothly thanks to many workers and volunteers. Big thanks also to all the vendors and presenters, and it wouldn't be the same without a few food trucks.

This is just an example of the many ways you can help local efforts to preserve wildlife corridors and wild areas in Monterey County.
These nonprofits work year round to support their missions and it's great to give during the holiday season and also extremely important to do so throughout the year.
Often we hear about the struggles more than the success stories so it's great to occasionally get to share one.

β€œFerrini Ranch is the last intact wildlife connection between Fort Ord and the Coast Ranges. State Route 68 and associated housing developments act as a barrier for wildlife movement, isolating Fort Ord National Monument. A short pinch-point segment at Ferrini Ranch was added to our list of priority wildlife connectivity barriers in 2024. Ferrini Ranch protects wildlife habitat and helps to ensure that this vital landscape linkage remains functional into the future.” β€” Zach Mills, California Department of Fish and Wildlife

Deer foraging at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
An early start to our rainy season has been a blessing to our local deer population.
Slow down for them at dusk and dawn when they are most likely to be crossing the roads.
