The Maa Trust

The Maa Trust The Maasai Mara Ecosystem is one of the most valuable natural resources in Kenya. Humans and wildlife have coexisted in the area for generations.
(1)

The Maa Trust works in partnership with conservancies and communities across the Maasai Mara to develop and implement initiatives focused on education and child protection, water and health, and sustainable livelihoods. The vast majority of the land area outside of the National Reserve is privately held land. This land area is critically important to the successful conservation of the Mara Ecosyst

em as a whole. The establishment and growth of community conservancies within the Mara Ecosystem is a good response to the threats facing the Mara Ecosystem. However, 60% of the Mara Ecosystem still exists outside these conservation areas and is critical to the integrity of the ecosystem. The benefits from conservation must be expanded to impact a broader population for it to be sustainable, including women, youth and children. The Maa Trust’s goal is to contribute towards the long term conservation of the Maasai Mara Ecosystem by empowering communities through its three pillars:

1. Education & Skills - Encourage inclusive and equitable quality learning opportunities within Maasai Mara communities.

2. Water and Health - Promotes healthy lives and wellbeing of communities through access to quality healthcare, safe water and WASH training.

3. Sustainable Livelihoods - Reduce household poverty, improve quality of life and increase resilience by empowering disadvantaged Maasai women and youth through diversification to environmentally sustainable livelihoods.

On World Environment Day, communities across the Maasai Mara are taking action to protect the environment while strengthening local livelihoods. Through conservation and sustainable development initiatives, they are helping to create a balance between people, wildlife, and nature.

In partnership with , we source indigenous tree seedlings and support their distribution to communities and conservancies for planting, contributing to habitat restoration and sustainable livelihoods. We also provide seedlings to community members involved in beekeeping through our socio-economic empowerment programme, creating opportunities for income generation while caring for the environment.

With support from Smithsonian Institution, the Professional Women in Conservation (WiC) forum from the Kirindon, MEP, Enoonkishu, and Enarau clusters conducted a series of career guidance and mentorship sessions in May across Molibany Comprehensive School, Oloonkolin Comprehensive School, Lemek Boarding Primary School, and Ole Tuya Comprehensive School, reaching a total of 1,008 learners, including 521 girls and 487 boys.

The sessions focused on empowering junior secondary learners through discussions on career choices, discipline, children’s rights, reproductive health and hygiene, menstrual hygiene management, peer pressure, good friendships, personal hygiene, and understanding body changes. Learners were also encouraged to explore diverse career opportunities, including STEM-related courses beyond tourism and management fields.

Additional discussions addressed harmful cultural practices and social challenges affecting children’s education and wellbeing, including FGM, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), early marriages, early pregnancies, drug abuse, school dropouts, negative peer influence, poverty, lack of school fees, and family-related emotional stress. Participants were also sensitized on GBV reporting and referral pathways and the importance of making informed life choices.

The sessions created safe spaces for learners to actively engage, ask questions, and receive mentorship and guidance aimed at building confidence, resilience, and a brighter future.

We also celebrate the completion of four blocks of toilet facilities with 22 units, alongside the rehabilitation of water storage systems and piping of water to a designated access point for community use, all made possible through the generous support of Aqua Nirvana Foundation.

Today, on World Menstrual Hygiene Day, we join the global movement in breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation and advocating for dignity, health, and equal opportunities for every girl and woman.

At The Maa Trust, we believe that menstrual health is a human rights issue and that no girl should miss school, feel ashamed, or face discrimination because of her period. Through the Mara Champion Clubs, we reach 19 schools and provide training on menstrual hygiene management, sexual and reproductive health, self-esteem, and life skills to empower girls and young women to manage their menstruation safely and confidently.

Together, let us create supportive environments where conversations around menstruation are open, informed, and free from stigma.
