The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Blue Campaign's website has a informative pamphlet where student & community leaders can approach addressing and education about human trafficking to those around them.

This particular link explains that the individual looking to inform, "may be a trusted adult for a young person, a moral authority in a congregation, or have the ability to empower their peers to learn to recognize and report human trafficking. Regardless of their specific role, their leadership positions them to educate and influence others."
They share a guide on how to talk to youth (ages 11-17) about human trafficking and inform them on what exploitation looks like, and how to avoid it.

"The 'How to Talk About Human Trafficking Youth Guide' can be used by any adult who is a caretaker of a youth or individuals who work with youth through formal or informal programming in classrooms, camps, community or faith-based programs, sports leagues, mentorship programs, and more. The information in this guide can be incorporated into existing activities, lessons, or conversations that are used to engage youth. This guide was created with a focus on middle and high school-aged youth (11- to 17-years old). The Blue Campaign youth guide is available in English and Spanish."

You can find the guide on their website.

"The crime of human trafficking hinges on the exploitation of another person. People often falsely believe “human trafficking” implies victims must be moved from one place to another to be a victim. Human trafficking does not require transportation to be considered a crime. It is a crime that can be committed against an individual who has never left his or her hometown."

You can help play a role in ending human trafficking by learning key indicators of the crime, raising awareness of human trafficking within your community or industry, and reporting suspected trafficking incidents.

"The increase in reports of CST – most children are sold for s*x on the internet, not on the streets – has had the sharpest increase: from 5,976 during first half of last year to 62,891 in the first six months of this year. The dramatic spike was prompted by passage in Congress last year of The REPORT Act. The REPORT Act expanded mandatory reporting to include two additional types of child s*xual exploitation: online enticement and CST."

The digital age of modern culture has not only allowed technological advances in areas of dire need, but also has opened a door to technological advances in the criminal world. Today, most children have access to some sort of device with some form of internet access on it, which child predators use to their advantage. Pre-teens and teenagers who have social media are also targeted by masked "ideal" individuals who convince them and then exploit them for their own gain. This has to be stopped. We cannot continue to sit idly by while our children are taken advantage of and manipulated from behind screens. We need to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Join the local battle.

MYTH vs. FACT:
A commonly shared myth relating to human trafficking is that "only girls and women are victims of human trafficking." That is false. The fact here is, both boys and men are just as likely to be victims of human trafficking as girls and women. They're less likely to be identified and reported, however. Girls and boys are often subject to different types of trafficking, for instance, girls may be trafficked for forced marriage and s*xual exploitation, while boys may be trafficked for forced labor or recruitment into armed groups.

Sixty percent (about 2/3) of children victims of s*x trafficking have a history of being in the child welfare system. This system is not made for our children and does not prioritize their safety.

"When youth feel like they are not loved, supported, or like they don't belong, they become ever more vulnerable to unsafe situations."
- National Center for Missing & Exploited Children

We need to be intentionally taking care and connecting with our youth. So many trafficked youth became a victim because they were vulnerable targets to the tactics and manipulations of the perpetrators to gain their affection. If we don't show them that we care and how they should be cared for, they will fall for the traps and illusions of affection from those who intend to hurt and abuse them.

Trafficking doesn’t always look violent.
Sometimes it looks like control.
Isolation.
Debt.
Fear.

Silence is its shield.
Awareness is ours.
