Hello from Circle City Droids!

Builders have been building droids, specifically astromechs, or R2 units, since the late 90s.

Indianapolis has played a key role in the early days of droid building and has had several area builders over the last 25+ years.

We started Circle City Droids to bring these area builders together and encourage new builders to join in this challenging and rewarding hobby.

My first build, below, is R5-A2, who was originally seen in the first Star Wars film, A New Hope, in the Mos Eisley scene where Luke and Ben are briefly interogated by stormtroopers. Blink, and you’ll miss him.

R5 is a mixed media build. His body frame and legs are wood. His body skins are aluminum. His details are a mixture of resin cast, 3D prints, and aluminum. His foot shells are steel and his head, or dome, is made of sheet plastic (styrene).

He currently runs on scooter motors in his feet, a carseat motor to move his head, and a tool battery to power everything. I also use a bluetooth speaker for his “voice”. Everything is controlled through an RC transmitter.
