Africa Thriving

Africa Thriving We exist to help communities help each other. We believe that when one community helps another, they The village has a tiny church and a school.

Every day I wake up, thankful that I was born in Africa, I just wish that everyone else born in Africa could have the same opportunity that I have been given to thrive. It was August 30, 2013 when I met Daniel Soope, a Maasai pastor of Amboseli Chapel. He had told us about a remote village that Amboseli Chapel was trying desperately to help. The next day he took us to the community of Risa and int

roduced us to Pastor Simon and his church. The community currently has to walk 6 kilometers to access clean water. The rest is all mud huts that the Maasai call “manyattas”. The plight of the people of Risa is severe but their spirit is rich. We enjoyed several hours worshipping with them and they were thrilled to have Americans visiting them for the very first time! They had a traditional Maasai guest ceremony for us and showered us with gifts and even gave us Maasai names. The name I was given is Saruni, meaning the one who brings help. There was part of me that was hoping that we wouldn’t really make a connection with anybody on that trip so that I could get back to my comfortable life in California and keep Africa as a distant memory. God had a different plan. And this is how it all started. A year later, we took a group of 24 people from the U.S. back to Risa to conduct a geological survey of the land to see if drilling a well is possible. The well IS possible and we have already secured the necessary permits to start drilling. While we were there, we also hosted a church planting seminar at Amboseli Chapel. This is something that Daniel had been asking for ever since we first met. On this trip the vision for Africa Thriving became clear. We will be the hands and feet of Christ by serving the needs of the poor and equipping local leaders to plant churches in their communities to help them thrive physically and spiritually. The mission is simple. Our mission is to serve the most basic human needs of resource challenged communities in Africa by bringing clean water, food and spiritual nourishment to equip and empower them to thrive and help others. Africa Thriving is a registered Non-Profit Corporation in the state of California. We have hired an attorney group that is in the process of submitting our 501 C-3 application to the federal government. They have told us that there is no doubt of getting approval but it may take several months to process the application. We have five board members that are all volunteers and no payed staff for our first year of operation. Our first payed staff will likely be Kenyans, because that is where the biggest needs are. And to be completely honest, they can do the work much better than we can. Our immediate needs as a start up Non-Profit Organisation is to build a website that will be our place to mobilize the community here and in Africa. It will be a place where you can see exactly what the organization is doing in real time, or at least very close to it. Another big need is for us to travel to Kenya and meet with government officials to secure permission for Africa Thriving to operate legally in Kenya. All of the contacts have been made, they are just waiting for us to make the appointments. Our last but most important need is to start the first phase of well drilling in Risa. On AfricaThriving.org (still in development) we will give individuals the opportunity to join the Africa Thriving family by donating 50 cents a day to help bring clean water to communities that simply don’t have any. The World Health Organization published a study that estimated that for every ONE dollar invested in clean water projects in Africa, the local economy would yield $8. That works out to almost $1,500 in a year going to the local economy from a simple investment of 50 cents a day. Would you please consider joining the founding family of donors for Africa Thriving? Regardless of the amount, you will always be recognized as a founding member of Africa Thriving. The best perk of being a member is that you can wake up every day, knowing that a small contribution is going to give others an opportunity to thrive. God bless and best wishes to you!

Our Africa Thriving adventure daily recap continues…

Day 4
We left Nairobi a couple hours earlier than we were planning to this morning. The younger generations have been protesting tax hikes and a president that does not relate to the working class and younger people looking for their first jobs after graduating from University. The protesters planned on closing down roads and blocking highways so we left at 5:30am to get out of Nairobi before the roads got closed. We made it through about 10 minutes before they closed the roads in Machakos!

The drive was pretty smooth other than the motorcyclist that we saw get hit by a truck. He flew about six feet into the air and landed on his feet and immediately started chasing the truck down to make sure that he stopped. Appearing that he was ok and others were tending to him, we kept driving south towards the Tanzania border.

We all had guessed what wild animal we would see first and Judy won with her guess of Giraffe! We saw some Giraffe not long after leaving Nairobi. Wildlife was plentiful once we turned off of Mombasa highway onto the main road toward Loitokitok. Zebras, Giraffe, gazelle and even elephant were all very close to the road before we made it to Kibo lodge to check in before lunch.

After lunch we went on our first safari into Amboseli National Park. It was a gorgeous afternoon and Mount Kilimanjaro was completely clear. We saw large herds of elephants crossing the road and enjoying some time in the marsh. We came back for dinner and the Kibo staff gave us a very warm welcome celebration after dinner.

Now that we have reached our final destination, we are all very excited to get out into the communities where Africa Thriving has been drilling wells and delivering food, Bibles and other key materials needed for the schools.
(That recap comes tomorrow :))

Word of the Day: Giving
Scripture: Matthew 6:1-4
My Notes: There is a secret about giving. As long as you are giving, you will never lack. In this incredibly magical place, I feel that there is nothing I can give that would measure up to what I feel blessed with by simply being here.

Day 3
We woke up to an ncredible view of downtown Dubai at sunrise. I was so excited to get to Kenya again that I couldn’t get back to sleep. After a wonderful buffet breakfast we loaded up and went to the airport to catch our flight to Kenya. We left Dubai at 10:30am and arrived in Kenya at 2:15pm. It was a short, easy flight and I was super stoked for several people in our group to experience Africa for the very first time.

We had a few issues going through customs with all the school supplies and soccer balls that we brought for the activities that we would be doing at the schools that we are serving. After over an hour of negotiating in the back office, we were able to get out of there by giving the customs agent 1 soccer ball for his son. I was pretty happy with that deal since the negotiation started at $600

We left the airport and got to the Grace House a couple hours before dinner. We invited several of our Kenyan leaders and friends to join us for dinner and it was really an amazing evening of getting to know each other. Our first night in Africa was one that we will never forget! We called it an early night since we were getting up at 5am the next morning to drive to the Amboseli area, on the border of Tanzania, right at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. (That recap comes tomorrow :))

Word of the Day: prayer
Scripture: Matthew 6:5-15
My Notes: I already feel prayer being answered on this trip. I could feel Gods presence in our group and on the activities that God has planned for us.

Day 2
We landed in Dubai and checked in to the Rove Hotel downtown. It was walking distance to the Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa (the worlds tallest building)

We explored the mall and ate dinner at an incredible Lebanese restaurant overlooking the water light show. It was Gary’s 70th Birthday today so we had an extra special dinner celebration.

After dinner we took a walk around the area and saw some amazing incredible sights and sounds of the Middle East. We went back to the hotel and got some rest before our flight tomorrow to Kenya. (That recap comes tomorrow :))

Word of the Day: Treasures
Scripture: Matthew 6:19-24
My Notes: We cant serve both God and money. God is eternal and he wants the same for us. It is far better for us to store up eternal treasures rather than material things on earth. In this place of extreme material things everywhere you look, it reminds me that the experiences and relationships that we will have on this trip will be eternal and never lost or taken away.
