It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of one of our longtime members, Brigadier General David M. Brahms, USMC (Ret.).
Many of our newer members may not have had the opportunity to know David, but for those who did, he was a beloved member of our Rotary family.
David lived an extraordinary life of service. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, he served 27 years in the United States Marine Corps, including service in Vietnam. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General, earned numerous military honors, including the Bronze Star with Combat “V”, and later practiced law here in Carlsbad. He even served as a technical consultant for the movie A Few Good Men.
But for many in our community, David was known for something entirely different.
He was Santa Claus.
For years, David brought joy to countless children as Santa at our annual Carlsbad Christmas Tree Lighting and our holiday celebrations for children. Behind the distinguished military career was a man who understood the importance of making a child smile.
Perhaps that’s the most wonderful part of his story. A man who accomplished so much in his professional life also found joy in bringing happiness to children.
David’s life reminds us that service comes in many forms, whether serving our country, supporting our community, or simply bringing happiness to a child during the holidays.
To those of you who knew David personally, we encourage you to share your memories and stories with our newer members. It’s important that we remember the people who helped shape our club and the traditions we continue today.
We do not yet have information regarding memorial services or other arrangements. I will share an update with the club as soon as those details become available.
On behalf of the Rotary Club of Carlsbad, we extend our heartfelt condolences to David’s family and friends.
Rest in peace, General Brahms. Thank you for your service, your friendship, and the joy you brought to so many.
