What makes Carlsbad a great place to live?

It’s more than a beautiful coastline.

It’s access to nature. Opportunities to get active. Places to learn. Wildlife worth protecting. Clean public spaces. And programs that help the next generation understand and care for the environment around them.

Since its foundation, CCF has supported projects across all of these areas, including Adopt a Stairway, Science in a Satchel, Kids & Conservation in the Great Outdoors, Pickleball in the Village, recycling education and infrastructure, and Reptile Researchers.

Together, these projects reflect a broader idea of community investment: caring for the people and places that make Carlsbad home.

What happens to the funds placed in an endowment?

The assets are invested for long-term support, while distributions are made according to the fund’s governing documents, spending policy and applicable law. The remaining assets continue to be invested, helping create a sustainable source of charitable support over time.

For CCF, building a community endowment is part of creating a philanthropic resource that can benefit Carlsbad not only today, but for generations to come.

The impact of giving doesn’t have to end with a single grant.

When we invest locally, we help address real needs in Carlsbad while building a stronger foundation for the future.

Through CCF, members help support local organizations and create a community endowment designed to benefit Carlsbad for generations to come.

Give where you live. Be part of the legacy.

In 2011–2012, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation awarded $32,809 to support New Village Arts’ production of Much Ado About Nothing, bringing free outdoor Shakespeare back to the Carlsbad community.

The production brought together professional and teen actors, connected local history with the arts, and gave families and theatergoers an opportunity to experience live performance right here in Carlsbad.

It’s one example of how a grant can do more than fund a program. It can help create a shared experience that becomes part of a community’s story.

Nearly 15 years later, it’s a reminder of why investing in arts and culture matters.

CCF has never had just one grant focus and that’s intentional.

For nearly 20 years, our mission has remained consistent: to improve the quality of life in Carlsbad.

But improving a community means paying attention to what that community needs.

Our grantmaking has evolved from youth education and environmental stewardship to arts and culture, homelessness prevention, COVID-19 recovery, and support for children and families.

The common thread is a commitment to holistic community improvement, supporting the people, places, programs, and organizations that help Carlsbad thrive.

CCF is fortunate to have people like Bob and Elaine Algeo, whose commitment to Carlsbad goes back to the Foundation’s earliest days.

As founding members, they helped lay the groundwork for a community of people who believe in giving locally and investing in Carlsbad’s future.

We’re grateful for their years of commitment and for the many members who continue to carry that spirit forward.

Thank you, Bob and Elaine, for being part of CCF’s story from the beginning!

Did you know CCF’s first grant cycle began with 107 members?

In 2007–2008, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation awarded $43,780 to two youth education programs: Science Olympiad at Carlsbad Unified middle schools and Junior Achievement’s Real World Life Skills program at BizTown.

Nearly two decades later, the needs have changed, our grantmaking has evolved, and our community has grown but the purpose remains the same: Bring Carlsbad together to invest in Carlsbad.

This year, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation awarded $86,500 in grants to four organizations advancing arts and culture in Carlsbad.

The 2026 Grants Celebration also explored how access to the arts can create opportunities for connection, expression, skill-building, and support for young people, including in the context of today’s mental health challenges.
